A great serpent, huh?

Tourmaline was eager to learn more. The Forgemaster warned it could be poisonous, and, quite frankly, that's primarily what perked her interest. She wanted to collect some of its venom to see what kinds of potions and salves it could make. Would they all be poisonous? Could it be manipulated into something with healing properties? Perhaps, in small doses, it could build up one's immunity? A few soquili and familiars would have to play guinea pig in her experiments, but, well -- that's just the way it went. They were usually willing, at least. A small speech about the greater good, about discoveries that could help soquili-kind as a whole was usually enough to win them over. Her kalona tail may be off-putting, put others on edge -- but the rest of her was friendly looking enough. Slap on a smile and the image was sold.

In the same vein, Tourmaline was rather wishing she had a different colored coat right about now. Her bright purples and blues made her stand out like a sore claw; she may as well have come here with bells and whistles on. The element of surprise was not going to be on her side as she hunted down this giant snake. At least Keevatha was here with her -- if one of them was attacked first, the other could jump in to pull the snake off.

Keevatha tried to keep herself hidden underneath piles of leaves; she was skilled at staying completely still for long periods of time, but she was in a similar spot as her bonded when it came to her markings and colors. Too bright, non-existent camouflage. Her eyes flicked around the area, keeping a watch out for any kind of movement -- when something skittered in front of her nose, she jerked her body forward and snapped her jaws shut tight around it, her body coiled and ready if the thing put up a fight.

Not a snake -- just a mouse. Dinner, then.

Erynion was not a fighter in any sense of the word. He was simply too gentle for that kind of thing. However, when he heard of someone exchanging goods for services, he thought it worth checking out. He didn't really know what wares were being offered - perhaps he could find some exotic seeds?? - so you could imagine his surprise (and perhaps, only *his* surprise) when the wares offered up were weapons.

He had thought of leaving and returning home, but he recalled his daugther's mate, Izotz, was a strong fighter type and he might appreciate something as a gift. And so, his familiar in toe, he headed out on his most daring adventure without a clue in the world as to how he was going to complete the task at hand.

"Remy, have you ever had to fight before?"

"Once a particularly nasty hawk was eyeing me up for lunch but it never came down to a physical altercation, thank the heavens."

"If things go bad, try and make it home to tell Vesper I was brave."

Remy clicked her tongue and swatted at Ery from her position atop his back. "There will be none of that, Erynion. We'll make it home safe with gifts and a story."

Erynion had opened his mouth to respond when he heard the rustle of movement and caught the source just in time to see it swallow a poor mouse. He froze for a moment before stammering. "A-Are you the Serpent?"

Remy said a silent prayer for her fallen, lesser brethren and her eyes caught glimpse of the mess of bright colours standing off from the gator. "Erynion, dear. I think that's the serpent there," she could not keep the tremble out of her voice.

Tourmaline's eyebrows shot up and she couldn't hold back a small laugh at their new company. "Serpents? No. My companion here is an alligator, and I simply have a tail passed down to me though my bloodline -- which, as it so happens, includes a Kalona. Don't you worry, though," she said with a sickly sweet smile, "we're not out here hunting down innocent souls such as yourselves. It does, however, seem that we have a common goal; the great serpent. I wish to extract its venom and study it -- it can be useful to learn how to make antidotes." She wanted to stake her claim on the venom now, just in case she would have to contest for it later -- this flutter and their mouse didn't seem like the type to want such a thing, though, so she suspected she wouldn't need to worry. In fact, Tourmaline was rather surprised they were here looking for the serpent at all. Foolish, or stronger than they looked?

Perhaps they would be good bait.

She cocked her head to the side as she regarded them before proposing her question: "Say, why don't we team up? Surely the four of us could face down a serpent."

Keevatha shook the leaves from her back to reveal more of herself; with all the talking, it was pointless to remain hidden anyway. She nodded her large head in agreement with her bonded, though -- suspecting they were both having the same thought. "We're such dangerous looking predators, I bet its afraid to show itself. With you two, I think the serpent would be more likely to show -- but don't worry, we'll protect you," she assured. Keevatha, at least, was speaking with honesty; she really wasn't sure if Tourmaline would bother. If they were going to help them, though, then its the least Keevatha could offer.

Erynion had never been in a combat situation - or any kind of dangerous situation outside of pruning his rose bushes - and so the fact that he was being used as bait hadn't occurred to him as a bad thing. He was happy to be of use. Besides, they said they would protect him and Remy and he had no reason to not believe them.

So he traipsed along the forest, making as much noise as possible, whistling innocently and carrying on like he didn't have a care in the world. It didn't take long for the serpent to appear, a soquili of indeterminate gender with a great, winding tail and fangs that were already dripping with venom.

Erynion had not meant to land the first blow - his kick was merely a reaction of the sudden appearance of the Serpent. Still, his blow landed heavily and he backed away, leaving some distance between them.

"Found the Serpent!" He called, a hint of pride in his voice that he had fought so bravely.

"Careful, Ery," Remy tugged on his hair. "Don't lose focus - battle's not over yet."

That was easier than she expected. Tourmaline expected some sort of protest, but the stallion had agreed easily to their plan. That could not have gone any smoother -- and it didn't take long for the Serpent to show itself, either. She had been expecting a snake, but when the beast revealed itself to be a soquili, she was surprised -- and intrigued. Now she was eager more than ever to extract the venom and examine it; she had never met a poisonous soquili before.

Oh, right. She ought to probably step in and help the poor flutter. Keevatha promised for them both. With a roll of her eyes, she charged in after the stallion managed a kick on the Serpent, leaving it stunned long enough to make her move. She lashed out violently with her claws, digging into soft flesh and carving gouges into the Serpent's side.

"Good job!" Keevatha called from the sideline; both in response to the stallion's success in luring the Serpent out and making the first move, and to Tourlamine's successful blow. She scampered across the ground in a dash, snapping her jaws at the Serpent's feet; with all the attacks from all different directions, surly the Serpent would be struggling to keep track of them all. The Serpent was quick to retaliate in its rage, snapping its fanged jaws at the soquili surrounding it, dripping venom with every bite.

Erynion watched in amazement and awe as Tourmaline landed a heavy blow. Inspired, he took a deep breath, puffed out his chest, and mustered up as much strength as he possibly could. He launched forward, hooves stomping and kicking against the Serpent.

"Take that! And this! And That!

Remy held on for dear life, little hands clutching Erynion's hair, her body swaying madly as he flailed. Her eyes tight shut, she was no longer focused on the fight, just not falling to her doom.

"Ery," she called out. "I think I'm gonna be sick.. Slow down.. and stop moving so much.."

Glad the stallion was at least making an effort, she was mildly impressed with the strength behind his blows -- he was stronger than she gave him credit for. Good; the sooner they killed the Serpent, the better. When the Serpent stumbled to the side from Erynion's blows, she quickly lashed out with her tail, curling the tendrils around its limbs and pulling -- hard. It fell to the ground, writhing to get back up, and as it jerked its head up to hiss at them she slammed a claw down on his head to keep him from biting anyone else. With the other, she closed her claws around its throat and swiftly delivered the final strike. Tourmaline didn't release the Serpent's head until she was certain it was good and dead. It wouldn't be getting back up again. Good. She began taking a few tools and other materials out from her satchel, ready to get to work in preparing to examine the body.

Keevatha offered a toothy smile at Erynion and his familiar. "Thanks for your help," she said, knowing Tourmaline wouldn't. She eyed the stallion's wounds with a frown, glancing back at Tourmaline only to find she was already preoccupied with prying open the Serpent's mouth, completely ignoring Keevatha and their company. She supposed it would be up to her, then. She sighed and looked back at the flutter and his mouse companion. "I guess I can escort you back to the Forgemaster, and we can get our wounds looked at. Tourmaline will be fine here."
