Five days ago this place had been alive with crowds in the stands and wriggly eggs on the hot sands. Now though it was quiet, dead quiet, and Lorux found himself looking up over his shoulder as he walked out onto the sands because surely there must be other people here? Nope, at least not yet, he was early but he was expecting to meet somebody else here to help with the first go-over of the sands.

Scratching his chin thoughtfully Lorux consulted the list of hatchlings and riders he'd brought along, so as he could be sure he got a nice in-d**k-it-ave shard of each shell to give to them. The one that hadn't hatched... Maybe the clutchmother would want it? Or maybe he should just leave it alone.

Rake over his shoulder and task in mind Lorux sauntered out onto the sands, usually he'd make sure he didn't start alone because why should he do more of the work? This was a bit different though, he was looking for mementos for his friends who'd Impressed and that was worth a bit more effort.

Serfie hadn't been able to sneak back onto the hatching sands for the first few days after her failed attempt to Impress in secret, too many new weyrlings searching for egg shards, other weyrfolk clearing up around the edges of the sands or also looking for little treasures. She'd cursed and sulked for about a day before getting herself together again, doing drudge work, doing the dirtiest of jobs to keep from being noticed too much.

When she finally got among the sands, she had to go back for sandals, she'd forgotten how hot it was underfoot, even when there wasn't a clutch on the sand. She was scrambling about the remains for shell shards, maybe if she found just the right shard, it would give her luck, she'd found several but nothing had been right, they'd been tossed aside, discarded, she was so focused on looking for just the RIGHT shard of eggshell, that she didn't notice someone else entering the sands behind her

Oh, looked like he wasn't first then!

"Wotcha!" Lorux called cheerfully to the young woman's back as he sauntered a halt a good few feet behind her. "You got clean-up duty too? Not a bad job, as they go." There were much worse things a candidate could be asked to do - or a drudge in her case going by the lack of knots. Was she new though? He didn't recognise her from behind and by now Lorux knew pretty much everyone in the lower caverns - the other candidates were great on the whole but only a few of them had come from drudging, spending time around his own sort was relaxing and comforting.

If Serfie wasn't so used to being given scares where she used to live, she may have just screamed, instead she jumped and her breath let out in one big whoosh when someone suddenly spoke from practically right behind her, she turned, her eyes narrowed, hand going to her side where she normally kept a knife but ... grasping nothing because she was drudging today and had left the knife in her hiding place.

"s**t" she muttered, eyeing the new arrival carefully "n.....noooo" she said slowly, she had no rake, just her drudge wear and some over sized, stolen sandals. "Why are you here? what do you want?" she asked suspiciously..

Uhh... Okay then.

Lorux held his free hand up placatingly, his other one still being occupied with the rake that was over his shoulder - it looked as though she'd been grabbing for a weapon there, what was with that? And she wasn't here working, and definitely not somebody he knew, but she was familiar. Hu.

"For clean-up duty?" Lorux repeated with an amiable though slightly puzzled grin, jerking his head at his rake for emphasis. "I want to be sat somewhere with me feet up, a snack, and a game of cards," he winked at the skinny girl, "but here I am on duty! Why're you here then? Oh!" The candidate's expressive brows shot upward and he jerked his thumb at himself. "Name's Lorux by the way." Where had he seen her before? You didn't forget a scarred face like that easy, or mistake it for another.
