She lay in the dimness, taking slow and shallow breaths. Her lungs burned. The air here was stale, and noxious, the product of many years of subterranean fermentation. With every breath taken into her body it felt like a heavy, choking cloud, a poison, that seemed like it was killing her slowly. Which, she supposed, it probably was.

How long had it been since she was locked up in this place? Sacrifera didn't know. She had tried to count the sunsets at first, but had lost track somewhere between the dreams and the fever-delirium. She could feel her head still burning with sickness, but was powerless to do anything, and not a single soul had come to see her since her imprisonment. She was weak, fatigued and starving, reduced to lapping up the vile cave water that pooled in the crevices after the rains. Sacrifera wasn't sure what her captors wanted with her; they were putting precious little effort into keeping her alive. It seemed, after all, the goal was not to simply hold her captive or kill her, but to agonize her with a slow death. She felt a cold chill settle into her bones and run down her spine at the thought.

Sacrifera strained her neck to look at the apex of the cavern, muscles straining with the effort for what would normally be a simple and easy task. The only source of light in the cavern was the hole at the very top, a jagged circle through which meager sun and rain could reach the depths below and the mare inside. It was angled in such a way that sunlight never touched her body, but rather stayed just out of reach, and was the source of her water when the rains fell. She wasn't sure what time of day it was -- morning? Afternoon? It would be impossible to tell until sunset. Everything here felt like an eternity to Sacrifera, trapped here in the darkness to suffer and deprived of her senses.

Around her neck and all four of her ankles were shackles, thick and heavy and made of metal, which were chained to the walls of the cave system. They held her tight to the point where she could barely move, exhausted her with their weight, and even made sleeping uncomfortable. Indeed, she had slept restlessly, tossing and turning. Her mind was as much of a mess as her body, and her body was covered in injuries. It was nothing fatal, but moreso death by a thousand cuts. Some of her feathers were missing. Her coat was dirtied and matted, in parts stained with her own blood where there were cuts and scratches, and many bruises covered her legs and neck; they had not yet had time to heal. Old, faint arrow wounds were visible on Sacrifera's chest and sides.
