Exhausted was an understatement for how the walker felt. He knew this was a bad idea the second he considered it, but, at the time, he did not care. He did not handle loss well, and losing to that booming, haughty, absolutely wretched panda mere days earlier had him heated. He would have had him had he been more wary of his surroundings and did not fall for the bearwalker's feint. The scum lured Ashura close to the edge of the cliffs, allowed him to get just close enough to smell victory, only to shove him off the ledge. Ashura was luckily able to shift into his feral form before he hit the first series of rocks, otherwise the tumble may have been fatal. His bones ached, and healing wounds disrupted otherwise pristine white fur.

And yet, he ignored all of his body's protests when the opportunity for victory presented itself again. Hunting down other purewalkers against which he could test his skill was no easy task, and he was lucky to find one every couple of months. Two in the span of days? This would not happen again. He could not pass up the chance to redeem himself for his earlier failure.

This fight pushed him to his limits. The wolf was formidable, equally fierce and strong, not to mention relentless. He only growled and lashed, and Ashura was not able to outmaneuver him like he is usually capable. He was not well equipped to handle a barrage of powerful attacks, relying on technique and speed rather than brute strength. Every time he parried or was struck by one of his foe's strikes, his muscles screamed. This wolf apparently felt no pain - unlike Ashura at this time - for each time he met Ashura's sword, he did not flinch. Bloody paws and snapping jaws continued their onslaught.

Ashura would not be able to take much more of this.

He needed to relax. He knew how to push past pain and calm his mind. He was beginning to understand that this was the greatest skill his master had taught him. The naïve fool taught Ashura to be more than just a mindless beast, to discipline both the body and the mind. That is what separated Ashura from other purewalkers - what separated him from this wild wolf.

Discipline.

There was a rhythm to the wolf's strikes, and Ashura felt when to counter. The beast opened his maw, lunging out for a taste of the fox. A single, short step at an angle with a slight push off the rear legs and a firm grip on the sword in his mouth, and he did not have to fight the wolf at all. Using his opponent's momentum against him, Ashura's blade was what the wolf's jaws found instead of flesh. Ashura's own forward step assured that the blade plunged into the wolf's mouth all the way through the back of his neck.

He withdrew his blade quickly, and the defeated fell heavily to the ground. A wave of satisfaction rushed through the victor... and washed back to his head. His vision blurred, and he collapsed, barely catching himself before he hit the ground just like his opponent. He was hurt, he was tired, and, worst of all, he was vulnerable. The blood from the aftermath of his duel would attract every carnivore within a few miles. He forced himself to his feet, slowly moving away from the corpse. Hopefully those that came would be satisfied scavenging as opposed to engaging him.

Snap.

The sharp sound cracked through the air, breaking the unnerving silence of the day. Not a bird chirped, not a leaf moved. The air hung heavy and silent. Afraid. It wasn’t every day that two skinwalkers would do battle, and none of the wildlife was insane enough to come out of hiding so close to the aftermath.

A paw the colour of midnight bore down on the twig, grinding it against the stony ground. Her mouth quirked up at the edge, just the slightest hint of a satisfied smirk dancing across her features. The wildlife might have known well enough to hide in their dens and burrows, to cower as they desperately tried to protect their families, but this mare had neither the perception to notice anything was even amiss, nor a strong enough drive for self-preservation even had she taken note of the unnatural stillness that had settled over the land. Her voluminous tails twitched once as lifted her paw, observing the destruction she had created.

If only it had been their necks, instead of just a twig. The smirk faded as she huffed, swiping the snapped stick out of her path with a flick of her paw. Yunnan stalked forwards, making no effort to conceal her whereabouts. Her antlers rustled through the tree leaves, snapping through vines and weaker branches without a care for the destruction left in her wake. Her tails made no effort to avoid any obstacles, resulting in a loud collision every few seconds as she angrily swished them from one side to another. Once again her father had barely cast an eye on her today, choosing once more to favour the others – the offspring from that filthy other mare. Yunnan let out a throaty growl, her tone surprisingly deep for a female. Her parents were by no means an exclusive couple, but Yunnan knew that she was the prized individual of their coupling. None of Marille’s other children could come close to the beauty of herself and her siblings, his firstborn litter – the first, and the strongest.

One day he would see that, she would show him just how spectacular she was – and he would turn away from those inferior offspring. What use did he have for them, after all?

Her eyes caught onto a sudden irregularity ahead. Momentarily distracted from her thoughts, she finally surveyed her surroundings. Her ears swivelled, focusing on the heavy air around her. Quiet, too quiet. Her nostrils flared. A tangy, iron-rich stench danced across the breeze. Blood. Her mind darted back to her half-siblings. No, surely she couldn’t be so lucky that someone had slaughtered them for her? The thought brought the smile back to her face for a moment, but no. Slaughter would serve no purpose but to martyr them in his eyes, then she’d never be free of their shadow. No, Yunnan had to best them fairly.

There – ahead of her. A corpse on the ground, and stumbling away from it, a white beast of a being. She didn’t recognise whoever was on the ground, some sort of animal? Too small to be a Soquili, surely, but one glance at the victor told her volumes. A skinwalker, white pelt stained blood red. A normal mare would have been scared, would have turned and run, but Yunnan’s curiousity got the best of her. “Skinwalker.” Her voice was rich and sultry, but deep and enticing to most. She held her ground, standing just far enough away that he might not have noticed her approach, and yet still far too close to truly be safe.

At first, Ashura paid little mind to the sounds of movement in the trees; however, the noises grew louder as their maker approached. It may have been wiser to continue distancing himself from the carcass of the lupine skinwalker -- surely the preferred meal to the carnivores in the area, even to those who favored killing their prey. Taking down even a wounded skinwalker was a dangerously difficult endeavor, and there were few beings in these lands who could manage to do so. It was this very possibility that he could be being stalked by one of these creatures that compelled him to face whatever it was that lurked in the shadows as it drew nearer.

Not a moment after the mare spoke did he come to a stop, casting a menacing glare over his shoulder. He observed her for a moment, and was immediately relieved. Although she had plenty of tails, she bore no pelt. She was a kitsune of a different kind, and ultimately not a threat -- unlike the white kitsune she heedlessly accosted, despite obviously knowing what he was.

It was usually an incredibly foolish decision; however, Ashura was in no condition to demonstrate why. Though he put on a brave face, he could barely move. If his survival depended on it, he could exert himself beyond these limits, but he would not initiate a fight in his current state. Perhaps she knew that, as she must have seen him staggering away from his victory. He could not fathom why else she would meet him, after seeing him kill with no interest in consuming the fallen skinwalker. That act alone must have indicated his nature: that he killed not to satisfy hunger, but for the sake of killing. Even so, she still came to him.

The thoughts gave him a headache, but he was still concealing his pain from the mare, unwilling to reveal exactly how disadvantaged he was at the time. Instead of expending all this energy ruminating on her motivations, he could simply talk to her. Conversation came naturally to him after years of training -- particularly with pretty mares -- and it could very well buy him time to rest.

"Aren't you observant?" he finally spoke, sarcasm evident in his smoky voice. His expression softened, though he still watched her closely. "You probably know about skinwalkers... why did you come to me instead of running away?" He spoke slowly, his body objecting to his continued effort to remain standing. Hopefully, she was benign enough that he could finally lay down.
