	Whitestar padded out of her den with a scowl. She usually wore a scowl nowadays. She knew that this sickness that wiped out so many cats had been StarClan's way of punishing them. She just knew it. And she was pretty sure the cause was because of all the non-clan cats that had been allowed into the clans lately and the half-clan cats. Of course, she couldn't prove that there were so many half-clan cats, but she just knew it. She was one of them after all. "Stoneclaw, where are you?" she called, looking around for her deputy.

	Mapleshade lay near the edge of camp, watching Sagekit play with a leaf. It had been a rough time for her. Her first litter killed by a fox and all but one of her second litter was wiped out by the strange sickness that had wiped out cats from every clan. A fierce agony pierced her heart as she watched Sagekit. This was her only kit. And she would protect him no matter what.
