Yuma Tsukamo lives with his granny and his older sister Karin. His best friend Bronk had just lost his dueling deck to the school bully named Reginald Castle aka Shark. Yuma is dueling Shark in order to win back Bronk's deck and to teach Shark not to pick on others anymore. He unlocks a spirit that is said to have some special power who so far told Yuma to wise up.

The spirit's name is Astral and unless he absorbs 99 number cards, his memory will be dim. The thing is, Yuma is the only one who can see Astral. It was a good thing Yuma won the duel against Shark because Astral was able to gain the memory from number 17 leviathan dragon and Yuma was able to win Bronk's deck back.

A virus known as the crash bug has been invading Heartland City and it is up to Yuma to duel Professor K who created the virus and stop the professor from destroying the place.

Yuma wins the duel, but in the end, the crash bug virus ends up turning on the stadium lights and projects a huge crash bug in the sky that shoots off fireworks when viewed through a duel gazer.

A student named Flip Turner always saw the flip side of things and became a bad guy. Now he has set his sights on Yuma and if Yuma loses Utopia in this duel between him and Flip, Astral will disappear.

Yuma defeats Flip, saves Astral, and becomes Flip's first true friend. He is hoping that Flip will change his ways and go on the straight and narrow from now on.

Astral doesn't know the difference between reality and TV and thinks that a TV superhero called The Sparrow is really somebody who might know more about Astral. Yuma tries to explain it, but it is when the boy who plays as The Sparrow becomes infected by a number card that Astral realizes the truth and Yuma must beat the sparrow in order to save the boy and Astral at the same time.
