The world was blanketed in white. Snow fell softly from a sky turned gray. The trees, with their thick winter coats, stood like aloof sentinels on the edge of the forest. A figure moved around inside the entrance to a familiar looking cave, emerging to take in the wintry scene before her. It was a Meanki, her coat dappled like a giraffe, small horns perched atop her head in a way that was deceivingly cute. Rinko lifted a paw to shield her eyes against the blinding white of the new winter world, raising her nose to the sky, breathing in deep the frigid air.
It burned her lungs but at the same time felt like the very first breath she'd truly taken in a long, long, time. Her ears perked to listen. Silence. The deafening silence vibrated all around. She frowned, trying to pick out shapes and discern their identity. It was impossible. With a sigh she wrapped her arms around her body, she should have grabbed a fur. She was waiting for him. Kebas. Her heart jumped a little in her chest at the thought of her mate and she sneered. You've grown soft girl. Never. The Meanki smirked and went to grab one of the many pelts off their bed, slipping it over her shoulders she watched, and waited, hoping he'd be back soon. It was breakfast time.

The Meanki could see him, there in the distance, finally her mate had returned. She couldn't stop the smile from lighting up her face the closer he got. It felt like she hadn't seen him in ages, though it had only been last night. As he approached she chuckled. Her laughter was warm and husky. "Ah, not with you to keep me warm I won't." She purred, her arms opening to invite him into the fur with her, ready to be wrapped in his embrace.
The wind picked up outside, it howled, faint at first but it was easy to see that the beautiful morning was trailed by a coming storm. Huh, more snow. It was always snow. Beautiful as it might have been she sometimes wondered if they'd ever feel the warmth of the sun on their backs. Their children had all grown. She hadn't been expecting for some time. Not that she never would again they just had plenty to keep them busy even without chasing little ones around the cave. It was nice to have him all to herself again. She was greedy that way.

Rinko closed her eyes and leaned her head back against his shoulder. The feeling of him so close after they'd been apart was almost intoxicating. Her favorite place in the world had always been, and always would be, in his arms. As he rubbed her fur to warm her up she felt a flutter in her belly and purred, the low timber of his voice in her ear sending a shiver up her spine and lighting up every feel good sensation in her body for a moment. After all these years he still made her weak, she almost wanted to say forget breakfast and drag him off to bed, but she really was hungry.
The meanki turned to face him again, her arms sliding up around his neck and her fingers lacing together as she pressed her body closer to his, her long tail sliding silkily across the ground behind her. Giving his neck a nuzzle she placed a couple kisses, followed by a couple nips, beneath his chin and spoke her request. Her voice was laced with a soft, playful growl as she buried her nose into his shoulder, eyes closing, taking in that familiar scent she could never get enough of. "Some meat would be nice. Maybe a bird. I think there are some grouse or pheasant hanging around close by the cave..." She wrinkled her nose, annoyed at the thought of sending him outside again. She wanted to be cozy in bed, snuggled up, maybe get him to wag his tail. It always gave her such satisfaction... in many ways.
Her eyes slowly opened again and she leaned back a little to offer him a coy smirk. "Get me a bird and I'll make it worth your while." She raised her eyebrows a couple times playfully, biting her lower lip for emphasis before she moved to slip out of his arms, heading for the fire to stoke it and make sure it was ready for game. The scent of smoke was mild since the cave got a decent amount of fresh air, the crackle of the wood made everything feel cozy as the fire consumed it. Time always stood still in here, even as it moved and the world changed around them. Her thoughts settled for a moment on their children, wondering where they were and if they were well. It had been so long since they'd seen them. Perhaps soon. Once the snow thawed. The spring was always a better time for a visit, she hated slogging through the snow. Though Kebas could certainly keep her very warm along the way.

Rinko had finished stoking the fire and turned to head for the entrance of the cave. She missed Kebas's warm arms already and was slightly annoyed with herself for not just skipping breakfast. She'd always had a healthy appetite however and missing meals wasn't the best idea in the wilderness, besides, she was bitchy on an empty stomach. The Meanki laughed softly, her arms wrapping about herself as she glanced around the cave. Who knew she'd end up so happy out here, in the woods. In her wildest imaginings she would have never dreamed this up. But here she was. And she'd adapted well.
From the day they'd first met down by the river, when she didn't even know anything about camping let alone survival, to here and now where she had learned to hunt for herself when Kebas was gone, to skin and gut and cook, to fish, to even the never ending task of keeping the cave warm and comfortable. She'd loved bearing his children. Honestly, it was probably one of her proudest moments. Bringing life into the world that the two of them had made. Next to becoming his mate, anyway. Another moment that made her heart swell. She didn't feel for anyone the way she felt for Kebas. And she never would.
The meanki collected more firewood from the large stack outside, her arms full as she turned her head and scanned for her mate. He was nowhere to be seen. She sighed, more annoyed with herself. All she wanted was to drag him into their cozy nest of furs and spend the morning wrapped up together. A tangle of arms and legs. Listening to the beat of his heart with her head pressed against his chest. It was heaven. She stacked the wood she'd collected in the makeshift holder when she heard the sound of his return, her ears perking.
She smiled up at the sight of him as he shook himself outside of the cave and rose to her feet, closing the distance between him once he'd stepped inside. She placed a paw on his chest, her fingers weaving through his pelt, and leaned up to kiss him. Her other hand snagging the pheasant. "My hero." She purred, giving an impish chuckled as she turned, her tail sliding up the inside of his leg before she made her way to the edge of the cave entrance, snagging a knife out of a block of wood.
She had the bird gutted and feather free in no time. The knife sang a little as she stabbed it back into the piece of wood and set the pheasant on the spit to cook. The smell was already heavenly.

Rinko cleaned her hands of any remaining viscera, she hated the feeling still, even after all these years. You could take the Meanki out of the city... everyone knew the rest. She still liked to be clean. Her gaze fell to Kebas and she smiled, grabbing a towel from a hook and heading his way. He'd taught her so much in their time together, things she never imagined she would ever do or want to do. But she'd also contributed some modern goods to their lifestyle. Her friends and the family she had left, when she did manage to visit, always sent her back home with gifts. Anything they couldn't use she quickly regifted before heading to the cave, there was no way she intended on lugging everything every single time. And Kebas, well, she tried not to drag him to the city if she could help it. The chaos and the noise and the smells, it could be overwhelming. She hated seeing him uncomfortable.
She tossed the towel on his head for a second, crouching in front of him and taking hold of the edges to slide it down around his shoulders. As his face appeared again she leaned in for another kiss. The fire crackled behind her, the sizzle of the bird making her stomach growl. But her focus remained on her mate. He was definitely damp, they needed to get him dry again otherwise once they did manage to crawl into bed the furs would be steamy in the wrong way. She rubbed his arms and neck with the towel a bit to help him get dry before she fluffed it out and draped it across his back, her eyes slipping over every bit of him as she did. After all this time he still gave her butterflies. She loved that feeling.
Turning her body she plopped her backside right between his legs and leaned back into him, the question illiciting a laugh, her head leaning back into his shoulder to look up at him with her big, beautiful eyes. "And ruin the surprise? I don't think so." She raised her right arm and cradled the side of his face in her palm, closing her eyes a moment to just exist in this space without any external distractions. This was the place that mattered most. Here in his arms. She could feel the beat of his heart, the scent of him soothing her senses, the warmth of his body close to hers. It was everything.
