About an hour after returning to his dorm from the Bombirdier Titan encounter…
Tsuki sat down at his work table with his SNAG placed in front of him and a pit in the bottom of his stomach. He had finally decided to call Oak about his Pokemon, or former Pokemon he guessed. Whatever had happened to them all after they were taken away was anyone’s guess- and if Tsuki was being totally honest with himself the mystery was less scary than finding out the potentially hard truth. But he tightened the grip around his phone and finally bit the bullet.
Ring… ring ring…
Eventually the sound of an old man spoke out of the phone’s speaker. Tsuki had made sure to call during the day in Kanto, meaning he was calling his time a little late into the night.
“Hello! Might I ask who’s calling?”
“Uh… hi! It’s Tsuki. Tanakada! My parents gave you my Pokemon about three years ago and I was wondering if I could have them back.”
“Tanakada… let me check to see if I have your name on file anywhere…”
“You see uhhh, I’m part of a group called Snagem. They weren’t exactly…”
“OH! Yes I remember this, I should still have them actually as research subjects.”
“Research subjects?!”
“Manners boy! It’s nothing too involved, they’ve just been living as wild Pokemon on my property where I can make observations on their behavior. Mind you, they were left free to come and go as much as they want so they might still not all be here but…”
The pit in Tsuki’s stomach got a little bigger after hearing that, pushing him on to ask more questions. “So they were released. But who’s still there then? Are they able to be transferred or do they need to be caught again? Who’s still there?”
“Mhmm… I have the list of Pokemon obtained by your parents here. I could send an aid to recapture and transfer your Pokemon back to you, but the question my boy is: should I?”
“I beg your pardon?”
Oak continued. “I was made aware that a nonzero amount of these Pokemon may be stolen! How would it be right for me to simply return them to you without so much as asking why?”
“Look, I get it that… some of my Pokemon weren’t caught normally. But I only snagged Pokemon from real bad guys, think about the people that helped with the Shadow Virus situation. Those were my bosses. You’d think they’d let me just abuse the tech they gave me? Please, those Pokemon are really important to me. I hand trained them all myself and I’d do anything for them, please.”
Moments felt like ages for Tsuki before Oak finally let out a sigh. “I suppose I could send them to you, if the ones remaining WANT to be sent back, mind you. Now we need to talk about the fee, Pokeballs aren’t as cheap as they used to be OHOHOHO!”
Tsuki rolled his eyes but said nothing. Why did he feel like his life and free time were in danger? “And what can I do for you professor?”
“You see, I’m interested in researching the differences in behavior of our dear Kantonian Tauros besides this new Paldean variant that we’ve just learned about. I’ll send you your Pokemon no problem, but do me a favor and record me one in the wild? Or better yet, catch and transfer one to my lab for a while for me to study. Consider it like a trade my boy!”
“And you can transfer them…?”
“In an hour. But you must help me in my research, and I’ll pester your headmaster if you don’t!”
Relief hit Tsuki like a brick to the head. “Y-yeah I can get that done easy! As soon as I have a free period day to head out I can get that done.”

Tsuki stood outside by a Pokemon Center in the middle of the night in Mesagoza City, impatiently hitting the refresh button on the PC to see when Oak’s Aide would finally finish transferring his Pokemon back to him. The one saving grace he had was Maggie being held in one arm to keep him warm in his pajamas, a baggy white shirt and Gengar themed pajama pants being all he had otherwise.
The professor’s words echoed in his ear. They had been allowed to stay at the lab, but they were also allowed to return to the wild whenever they decided that they wanted to. What if they all left after being gone for so long? Was it terrible of him to want for them to have waited?
And then click.
Holding his hand over the mouse, Tsuki took a breath and moved whatever Pokemon he had in his box to his party (the league could, frankly, eat his shorts if they didn’t like his following their six-to-a-team rule for a moment). As far as he recalled, his parents had taken away all but Maggie- so he has lost nine in total. Terra, his Flygon. Slash, his Sneasel. One, his Ivysaur. Charcoal, his Charmeleon. Coffee, his Cofagrigus. Skarsy, his Skarmory. Alpha, his Metang. Anubis, his Riolu, and finally Baja, his Blastoise. Conveniently though, and unfortunately in Tsuki’s situation, that rule wasn’t going to be broken tonight.
His heart sank, but Tsuki felt some relief at seeing four Pokeballs neatly placed next to one another in front of him. Before he could decide on who to send out first, his Magby swung out of his arms and clicked them all at once. “Magby-by!” she cheered, pointing at them while speaking to her trainer.
“Baja?” Tsuki said, almost whispering before being taken aback by a Tackle from the hulking turtle/tank of a Pokemon.
“Blast-ooooise.” Baja hummed, rubbing his head against his trainer’s in a way reminiscent of a cat shoving it’s face against it’s owner.
“Baja!” Tsuki cried, hugging his Pokemon back and only then noticing the Flygon leaning against his back, the Cofagrigus hovering above with a wicked grin, and a Hypno standing a healthy distance away (arms crossed, but side eyeing his trainer with clear concern). “I’m so sorry guys, I didn’t- I didn’t-” He tried to speak before breaking down into another sob that his friends were there to help comfort. The sinking feeling from before may as well have never existed in that moment.
“Terra, oh my god, it’s actually you.”
“Flyg-fly gon flygon!”
Tsuki snorted, remembering what he had mentioned to Aile a few days ago about understanding some words of Flygon-speak. He scratch the part of her head behind her antennae that he knew she liked so much. He moved onto the Cofagrigus floating above him and pat the ghost type’s sarcophagus. “Coffee, you look so shiny now! How did you manage to keep up with that…?” He mumbled a bit, inspecting the Pokemon for any other marks before catching eyes with his Hypno.
“Hi Grumps!” Tsuki said, giving the antisocial psychic type a small wave. He waved back and looked away. He sighed but smiled, knowing that was just how he preferred to dole out his affection with everyone. The boy was actually really surprised that out of all the Pokemon that stayed, that he was counted among them. That definitely counted for something in his book. But he shoved that thought down so he could process it later; for now he wanted to focus on the positives: the Pokemon that he did have!
“Oh, I need to fill you guys in on what happened. And show you this other lil guy I had to catch, let’s uh… let’s get you in your balls so I can get us back to my dorm!”
For the last three years, it had just been Tsuki and Maggie bunking it together in his dorm. The recent addition of an Applin didn’t do much, but four fully evolved Pokemon definitely made the space feel more cramped than he would have liked. They were all mostly sitting down on the carpet floor, with Magby on the bed and Coffee in the opened closet. “So, I should let you guys know what happened.”
“After we got arrested, mom and dad had you guys all taken away from me and donated you guys to Oak. Then they sent me here- Paldea. It was cut off from most of the world until like… a month ago or something? I was only able to get contact back with Oak because the Snagem guys happened to be visiting.”
“Magby mag.”
“Good point. Also they tried tampering with my SNAG and it auto bricked itself. So there was no way to contact you guys and no way to leave the region.”
“Cofagri-i-i-igus.” His Pokemon hummed, shaking the sides of his golden coffin. It seemed like what their trainer said had made sense so far.
“Oh, also!” Tsuki started before sending out the Applin he had caught a few days ago. “I hadn't’ caught a Pokemon since, but I had to catch this guy the other day to keep him from being squished. I’m thinking of calling h-hey stop that!”
The redhead moved the grass type who had been trying to eat a part of his blanket. “I’m calling him Snapdragon. And that’s where we’re caught up!”
“Magby.”
“Oh right, and also we’re fighting kaiju sized Pokemon now. Oh and ALSO also I’m holding onto one for Sub, look-!”
Tsuki wound up receiving a reprimand from his dorm’s RA for the ruckus he caused.
