I'm in canberra - now what do I do.

I am staying with my mum in canberra for a few weeks. So far its been day and a half and mum has gone back to work so I am left here with a bus pass and no idea where to go with it.

What is there that is cool to see in canberra?

Ok, well that depends on what you like doing & whether or not you have money.

FIRST OF ALL: Go into Civic (aka "City"), Belconnen, Woden or Tuggeranong (whichever's closest) & look around in cafes, youth centres etc (or ask around) until you find yourself a copy of "BMA", which is a free magazine which has all the info of what's on (for youths) in Canberra.
Alternatively "City News" can be good too, but there's less free stuff & more pricey theatre & museums.

Then find youself a nice grassy spot (actually, it's too cold, scratch that) Go into a cafe & get a hot chocoloate while flipping through it.

If you still can't find anything you'd like to do, Museum-wise there's the big, ugly orange & purple monstrosity nearish Civic (it's actually really interesting inside, it's just really ugly to look at), there's also the National Gallery, National Library & Questacon.

Or you could go out to Gold Creek Villiage (near Gungahlin-ish) & look at the miniature villiage & buy some good lollies. There is a dinosaur museum & a reptile centre there too.

Canberra's really good for picnics (near Lake Burley Griffin, for example).

You could always go past EPIC, they usually have sales or books fairs on.

Or you could go to Parliament house & inquire about tours...

Is not! It's nice & (mostly) clean & LITTLE! It can't be a bigger anything than Sydney when it's most probably the smallest city in Aus (it's SO not a city, it's a large town that doesn't like to admit it). blaugh

i never said it was bigger than sydney in size.... i said it was bigger shithole than sydney 3nodding i didnt find it that clean either neutral no offence but the only good thing about canberra is the war memorial, like 10/10 for that but teh rest was s**t

ALso the science museam is cool.

The Galleries are ok too.

Hey man, I came from a place that got really excited when it got its first mc donalds. I could walk in one end of town and walk out the other in twenty minutes and they called that place a city. I swear the place is kept alive on old people in retirement villages alone.

I know you didn't... & I'm saying that there's no way it could be a "bigger shithole" than Sydney when there's less riots (or none), less graffitti, less crime, less violence (& not just because it's smaller, I'm talking percentage-wise), less drugs... basically there's less of everything bad.

It's mostly just museums & theatre & nice picnic places. Because of that, it's a great place to grow up, but a few years after you can legally go clubbing, you completely run out of stuff to do, because you've done it all (speaking from personal experience).

@ Threadmaker: If you like drinking/clubbing, get yourself to Shooters in Civic (right at the bus interchange) $2 entry & $2 drinks till midnight (2am on thurs). After Shooters, you'll be drunk enough to have fun anywhere (even if most of the clubs have gone kinda bad lately blaugh )!

If I had mates here not just family I soo would. I am as big a fan of getting shitfaced as any ausie, but getting sloshed in a strange city with no idea where I live woudn't be too good for me.
I still can't go into the city without someone from my house going with me becuse there are no distinguishable landmarks at the bustop where we get off, and of course they don't number the bustops here, that would be too convienient for me. as far as I am concerned I just sit on the bus untill someone gets up at a street that looks exactly the same as all the other streets we had been driving down and pokes me to do the same.

The city (& Belconnen, Woden & Tuggeranong)'s pretty easy because the bus will stop at the interchange & it's likely they'll kick everyone off... even if they don't, it's still pretty hard to miss.... I've never met anyone who's managed to miss the interchange...

From experience, Canberra buses are exactly the same as Melbourne & Sydney buses... in Melb & Syd I have never seen a number on a bus stop, so why would Canberra have them? You have to do the same thing in Canberra that you do in Syd & Melb, pick a landmark or a building & use that as your marker. The buses don't run after about 10:30 anyway, & the taxi drivers will always be able to get you home.

And Canberra's pretty easy to make friends in, just start chatting to randoms & tell them you're from out of town, chances are, they'll think it's fantastic & give you a mini-tour!
