I have/had a French teacher who CONSTANTLY said this to me. No matter how I tried to explain to her that that wasn't the case, she would ignore it and convince herself that she knew what she was talking about. She was relentless.


Does it bother you when people say that?
Why do you dress the way you do?

I hate it when people say that. stressed I dress the way I want to because I like it, I think it looks nice, I feel like it, or because it's comfortable. Not because of attention.

I feel exactly the same way... I always feel uncomfortable when people comment... I never know what I'm supposed to say. I know some days no one says a thing, and I go home happy- like I can be myself and be accepted.

I hate hearing stuff like that, another thing I hate to hear is "it's just a phase she's going through" yeah sure... I dress like this because I like it, because I feel comfy with it (instead of dressing in a pink shirt saying pornstar), and I've been on my way to become/being goth since middle school... and I'm now 18... it's just a phase my a**!

Honestly nobody has ever said that to me, mostly because what I wear is original, and most of the time, not incredibly gothic in nature. Yeah I have a few trenchcoats, but not a single black one. My winter coat is grey and my summer coat is tan. I wear high tops (or as they are known here, chucks) as well as hiking boots. I have one chain, which my keys are attached to, and most often I wear colors..

and a top hat. Anyways, I totally had an epiphany tonight... goth is about being unique right? Well if people are dressing up in black, corsets, fishnets, heavy makeup and such, wouldn't that mean they are dressing like all other goths, following the crowd, and being unoriginal, thus defeating the purpose?

Edit: also couldn't that apply to everything else as well?

I dress however I want to dress because I feel like dressing that way. Although sometimes I might wear all black for a specific reason, like after I finished reading the latest Harry Potter book. Yes, I am a dork like that. I've been reading Harry Potter since I was in 2nd or 3rd grade and I'm still... quite attached to the characters. Savvy?

I dress the way I do... and sometimes even sleep in the cloths because they are so comfortable. I dont know about you, but I look at the chicks with the really short shorts that every time they lean over there a** hangs out and I think how they can be comfortable. I also like the giggle sound of my trench coat, boots, and pants (that have chains, D-Rings...ect...) when I walk. I cant stand the attiton I get from me cloths and when people ask me about them. I either just stare and not answer normal they back off pretty quick...or I ask them why they dress the way they do and they tell me its comfortable. They stop and think... Then I laugh evily and the run away...

God, at school there was this preppy kid who liked to listen to country and came up to me and was like, "Why do you dress like that? And why do you like that headbanger crap." I turned to walk away from him, because I didn't want to waste my time on the country bumpkin and he ran and got right in front of me again and starting dissing me and my music and I just said, "it's a form of self-expression" because that usually shuts people up. 3nodding

Yeah, people always seem to bring up the "you're just doing it for attention" thing... Whenever I see a thread on a forum about goths, people always finish the discussion with "They're just selfish 13 year olds who want to stand out and be different. They're just attention whores. They grow out of it though; goth is only a phase. If they haven't grown out of it by the time they turn 15, it's just pathetic". I despise when people say this. I always try to explain the whole "Those are kindergoths/mallgoths, not members of the actual goth culture..." but everyone is convinced I'm wrong, and they're right.

Yeah, I understand what you mean, but there's a key difference with (many) goths. I'll use me as an example:

I like my black clothes. I like my trench coat. I like my pants with the corsetting up the legs, and I like my top hat, and I like my combat boots. However, I'm not trying to be different than the mainstream. Nor am I trying to fit in with goth fashion. I would still wear these clothes if they were the biggest fashion trend in the mainstream, and I would still wear them if no goths did at all.

Many goths I know do this too. Therefore, we are unique, we just happen to spend time in a group that has such similar tastes as us. It would only be conformist if we dressed this way to be Goth, as opposed to dressing this way because we like it.

Also, while many goths dress similarly, there is no unified goth style. Goths tend to wear black, and there are certain accessories which many goths have, however, there is no singular, universal goth look. Cyber Goth, Rivet Head, Classic Goth, Punk-Goth, Fetischer, Vampyre-Goth, Graver, Visual-Kei, Elegant Gothic Lolita/Aristocrat... there are many, many different goth styles, and few people just follow one. Most goths have their own individual style all their own, even if it overlaps with others.

I dress in many diffrent ways to express my very diffrent moods and to be original. I don't mind getting a bit of attention but I don't dress to be the main attraction.

I know some people who act all morbid because they want attention. One girl bring bloody dolls to school so the girls who don't like that sort of stuff would tell her she's crazy and to impress her friends. Even though it's negative attention she still does it because she really wants to be noticed.
I think it's sad that she feel such a need for attention that she would smile when someone is telling her she's a freak.
