a fan made it up at their 3rd concert. patrick asked the crowd what their name should be and somebody yelled fall out boy. the fan got it from the simpsons.

It was their third concert so I don't think they weren't exactly "big" then.
Fall Out Boy was Milhouse's superhero name, right? I think I remember that episode now.
