Heel and toe reinforcement is pretty easy. If your sock yarn comes with reinforcement thread, use that. If not, go buy some sewing thread of the same color. When you get to the heel and toe part of your knitting, just carry the thread along with the sock yarn and knit both like it's just the yarn. Weave in the thread ends when you're done and there you go. This is only needed if your sock yarn doesn't have nylon or some other synthetic fiber in it. If you're making socks out of 100% animal fiber, reinforcment thread will make the socks last much longer.

I have no idea what tabi socks are, so I can't really help you there.

You can also do stockinette or garter Heel Stitch. For stockinette, it goes like this:

Stockinette-based Heel Stitch (even # of sts)

Row 1 (RS): *Slip 1, Knit 1; Repeat to end
Row 2 (WS): purl

Garter-based Heel Stitch (also even # of sts)

Row 1 (RS): *Slip 1, Knit 1; Repeat to end
Row 2 (WS): knit

Both of these stitches make individually shorter, denser rows, so that it takes more of them than it does of regular stockinette to make the same length of fabric. They're thicker and way more durable, and you can reinforce them further with reingforcing yarn or by using two strands of your sock yarn. The garter-based version draws in more (just like regular garter stitch), so makes an even thicker heel. I also like to use this stitch on the toes of my socks, since mine tend to wear out on the balls of my feet first.

Another thing to think of is calluses. Anywhere you have calluses on your feet, your socks are going to get a lot of wear and tear, so you should reinforce them there as well, or get good at darning!

xd You probably could, but seeing how much material goes into making a pair (I made a pair for Halloween one year)... it'd probably take you a good year or so to knit up. sweatdrop
