Does anyone even understand why he says "oro"??? or where it even came from? i just found a thing on myspace that had kenshin in chibi form and it said "Oro" on it, so obviously, i get myself stuck in the maddness and i end up saying oro whenever im bored... (XDDD) anywho, can you answer this question?

It may come from おろおろ (orooro), which means "nervous/flustered," but...

But since it is used as an expression of surprise typically, it's more like a cute noise. In Japanese words like あれ (are) and あら (ara - for girls) are used in the same manner.

Ex: 『あら? あなたもここにいるの?』 "Ara? Anata mo koko ni iru no?" (Oh my, you're here too?)

Cold be, 『おろ? あなたもここにいるの?』 "Oro? Anata mo..."

So it means: oh, oh my, what, gosh, etc. Any sort of non-offensive exclamation, more or less. It's really just a sound that was added to make Kenshin a sillier, more adorable character.

Oro means (in RK at least) means something along the lines of "Huh?" or "Wah?". Its something you say when you're started or flustered. The thing that Akira_Hoshino said also seems true.

What everyone else says.

It's my understanding that the creator of Ruroni Kenshin made up the word "Oro" and "Ruroni" At least from what I've heard.

I'm not sure about rurouni, but I do know oro is a real word. I've heard it in other animes and in games.

Actually it's not. It's a word Watsuki made up; he even says so. You're probably thinking of rounin, which is a word used for a post-feudal era samurai. It's easy to mix the two up. ^^

Yup. More used by boys.

But it's actually usually an adverb. NJStar dictionary says: おろおろ (orooro)(adv,n,vs) nervous; flustered; in a dither; all shook up; (P).

The noun "oro" おろ means something else that is probably more than PG-13 rated. rofl

I got the trans for oro and oro is actually a southern thing in japan and means something like "That it is." I LOVE RUROUNI KENSHIN!!! See what i found: (sorry its kinda long)

Out of the shadows of the Bakumatsu, a lonely warrior wanders through Japan. He suffered great pain and loss during the Revolution as a young man/
A hired assassin, a killer by the age of 14, he served the Imperialists as an executioner of justice. In order to free the common man, a boy named Shinta learned the ancient sword technique, Hiten Mitsurugi, from his master, Hiko Seijuro.

As a child, Shinta's parents died and he was sold into slavery. One night, a band of rogues attacked the group of slavers and slaughtered everyone for fun, including the women who were caring for the little boy. The women covered him wth their bodies to hide him. Hiko, a great samurai, came across the mess and killed the murderers, saving the little boy. Then Hiko walked off.

Feeling guilty, he wandered back to the field of slaughter some days later when he discovered that tje little boy had not been seen on the road anywhere near the area. When he arrived, he found that the little boy had dug graves for each and every person with his own hands and buried all of them. Admiring his strength, Hiko took him in as his student, and gave him a new name..... Kenshin...."Heart of Sword"..

After training for several years, Kenshin began feeling pride in his abilities and decided to leave his master's tutelage in order to save people from the cruelty of the Shogunate government. His master warned him that if he went, he would not be a hero, but a killer of people. Stubborn and obstinate, Kenshin ran off and joined the revolution.

Over time, his idealism faded. He was quite simply a trained Hitokiri...a man slayer. He was wickedly cunning and one of the best that ever existed. There was no glimmer of remorse in him for what he was doing. His beautiful inner self was disappearing, and creating two people inside; the one who loved peace and the insane killer.

Then one night, a young woman, drunk and dizzy, stumbled across a battle between himself and a ninja, one of the Oniwabanshu. She became his temperance in time, and showed him love and a way to find peace. He fell madly in love with her in his quiet way. What he did not know was that she was the fiance of a man that he had mercilessly slaughtered in the past. It was he who gave Kenshin one of the scars on his face. She was set up to provide Kenshin with a distraction while his own assassination was plotted.

I'm interested to know what translator you used... I've never heard that translation in five years of study, so I'd like to confirm it. In any case, whether it is or not, that's not how Kenshin uses it. His tone of voice should be enough to convey that.
