Now, for all of you silly little nitpickers of sexuality and such, I was bored and reading the IMDB for Johnny Depp (I picked up a new roleplaying character based on one of his characters out of a different movie, and was trying to get some inspiration. I digress).

Anyway, straight from the horse's mouth, as it were. A Johnny Depp quote on the sexuality of Jack Sparrow.

"Well, there was a great book I read. . . . What was it called? Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition. A very interesting book. I wasn't exactly going for that with the character. And Keith is not flamboyant in his actions. Keith is pretty stealth. But with Jack, it was more that I liked the idea of being ambiguous, of taking this character and making everything a little bit . . . questionable. Because women were thought to be bad luck on ships. And these pirates would go out for years at a time. So, you know, there is a possibility that one thing might lead to another." [when asked by Rolling Stone if there is a "gay undercurrent" to his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies]

Basically boiled down, he's right. Pirates weren't exactly the most caring people, about society's standards, or taboo or any of that. And if you have any libido at all, you KNOW that it's hard to live with all that pent up sexual urge and desire.
Now take a look at Jack. Here is a walking embodiement of libido. Take what you want, do whatever comes to mind, or whoever, as the case may be. Why on EARTH would Captain Walking Hormone go without sex?

There. Now for all you naysayers, just remember, don't get snarky. In the JackxMale couples thread, I already told you, it would be utterly ridiculous to think too hard about it. He's a sexual kind of guy, and it would be entirely in character for him to start trying to chat up a palm tree, if he were drunk enough.

I could soooooo imagine Jack being gay. It would be soooo cute! But then I'd be sad because he wouldn't love all us girls...
But actually, not only were pirates possibly gay, most of them REALLY WERE homosexual. After being on a ship for years with only men, it would just happen. And did you know that island of tortuga was a real place? And that is was actually like it is portrayed in the films? Apparently the government or some weird person decided that they were tired of having gay pirates and so shipped thousands of prostitutes to the port of tortuga to seduce the men into homophobia. Source razz irates; an illustrated history by michael cawthorne. I would directly quote to get it right, but im really laaazy...but enjoy the info biggrin

The government sent whores to Tortuga? That's rich. rofl
Well, it makes sense really. But there you have it folks, Pirates were by-and-large NOT straight, so why would our flippantly flamboyant Captain be any different.

Caged bird syndrone.
If you're on a pirates ship, surrounded by guys...it's bound to happen at least sometimes. Maybe that's why they didn't take women with them.
But like you said, they had whores in Tortuga so Jack probably went there whenever he was 'in the mood'

You can't just zip on over to Tortuga when you're on a galleon. Like Depp pointed out in the quote, they'd be gone for months and years at a time, making port only when they needed to for only as long as they needed to. Not to mention, it's a pretty damn big ocean, despite. The Spanish Main would take about a month and a half to cross on a galleon, in good weather, with the wind fully at their backs the whole time, with no stops.
See what I'm getting at?

That's actually very fitting xp it fits in with the whole nature of Jack I think...a little bit of everything, it doesn't matter..he's a cheat and everything anyway..yeah..I can see Jack as going for "anything" xp

Well,I guess when it's put that way, it makes a lot of sense. But...The pickings on the Black Pearl are kind of slim, don't you think? I mean, it's not like there's a cabin boy for him to ask to come sit on his lap...There's Gibbs, Cotton, the dwarf ( crying ), Ragetti, Pintel, and some other equally unattractive crewmembers that I shudder at the thought of being buttsecks'd...Unless...Jack took out his sexual frustrations on the monkey? gonk

But really, who do you think Jack would've done it with?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEVAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

... That's an awful lot of O's and exclaimation points. *truncates*
And anyway, even if you don't believe me, why on earth wouldn't you believe the man who PLAYED Jack? I mean, he is, after all, the ONE person who knows the character best.

Jack, to me, did seem like he COULD be gay or have some sort of physical relationship with someone on board if he wanted to. His actions and even the way he walked might suggest something gay or flamboyant. But I think for the most part, he was straight. Maybe bisexual, leaning heavily towards girls?

Harsh wankers of sailors and pirates were basically like inmates with a ship instead of a prison untill they docked.

::drools::

In reality, pirates could be out to sea from months to YEARS at a time. I'm pretty sure some stuff was going on- it makes sense, especially because they are well known for getting drunk. And lets not forget that on top of them drinking a lot, their alcohol was WAY more potent than our's.

Hmmm, I wonder who Barbossa got it on with?

Yup, as was Port Royal. In fact, Port Royal was an even worse place than Tortuga- a very reputable name amongst pirates and whatnot. Then there was an earthquake or something, it was destroyed, and a governor came in and rebuilt the place to be not lawless anymore.

I can easily see jack being gay. xd He acts that way all the time, except when he's trying to hit on the women. Maybe he's bi? lol

The palm tree? eek

Owch. whee

Pirates being gay and stuff is feasable. Same thing as the samurai of the feudal ages are (like the very aesthetic ones (or hawever you spell it))). The samurais were to stay away from women or something like that in thier convent/monastary, so historians believed....Well you get the idea. Sorry my information isn't too reliable. I recall reading something like this years and years ago. sweatdrop

I wouldn't say that he was gay. He did go to Tortuga and he pissed off enogh women that he must have had relations with all of them. But being on a boat for years out at sea and then not having any women cause they were bad luck. Well, something definitly could have of happened. But I wouldn't say he was gay. More Bi and he was probably drunk most of the time anyway.
