I find that most literate people are adults .. around 20 years old. I'm a 7th grader, which means I'm 11 .. turning 12 next month. 3nodding
I'm not being a stereotype, because I didn't say ALL literate people are adults. I just find that most are. Why is that?

I've just turned 17 last Saturday, and I finished year 12 (out of 12) a week before that.
Trends account for part of the illiteracy problem amongst younger people. Promotion of chatspeak in popular culture is ridiculous.
Of course, laziness is also a big problem. There are also people who really have trouble typing when they're first learning to use computers.

I'm 17, at last.
I agree with The MoUsY spell-checker. With so much TV and the internet, as well as advertising, people just aren't sitting down with a good book anymore.
I can easily forgive those who are new to using computers, but laziness annoys me. If someone is so lazy that they convert 2 syllable words into monosyllabic blends of numbers and letters, completely raping the English Language sideways, then that annoys me and the person should be poked repeatedly with a rusty spoon.
Now that that's out of my system... stare

I'm age 13 and am very literate. I read many books and began to read when I was 4. I think that reading has helped me to become literate, but I tolerate TXT TLK. But only if you are actually texting on a cell phone. Otherwise I really need you to type out words.

Erm, I'm 18 turning 19 in less than a month. It is possible that your theory's right, but I know quite a few people my age and older who aren't all that literate. Perhaps it's just the people most interested in literacy are slightly older, or even younger.

I'm 18. I guess adults have just spent more time in school and college and had more time to read and learn.

Well, I'm 17 and much more literate than a lot of people I know, and that includes some AP kids at my school. which is scary. But I also find that people 20 years or older are more literate.

I'm seventeen.
Its very scary, because there are many 21-23 year olds that are completely illiterate and cannot write or read to save their life. Sad, but very true.
