I only care about it because I've learnt over the years that certain labels are poorly made. I'll buy anything as long as 1) I like it and 2) I know it's not going to fall apart on me.

Edit: this is assuming we're talking about clothing brands.

Topic creator- You have to be a bit more specific.

Why do we care about the goth label?

Goth isn't just a label. It's a thriving culture with a large music scene, multiple fashion styles, unique vernacular, iconography, and more.

What he said
><
And there are different types of people that hang with their kind of people.
Some people just hang out with different people when they want to.
And both ways are just fine.
Theres two options sorta.

I mean I rarely see Goths hanging out with preps.
There just not compatable.
Their lifestyle is just too different.
When labels come to my mind I don't think of just one person and what they do, I think of lifestyles and how they do things differently.
Not that all the things the do are wrong, just different.

Labels, as in clothes? Or label as in goth?
For labels, I don't really care. I'll buy what I like, as long as it isn't from A and F or AE.
For the goth label, I don't know. I can't pretend I don't use labels, because I do, and I don't really care if labels are used on me.

People have given labels such a bad reputation.

Now the word is used badly.

Unfortunately, that's true.

There's nothing wrong with labels if they're used correctly.

Personally, I take offense when people use the label incorrectly. You know, when they call mallcore 'goth,' or lump it under punk, or whathaveyou. I may be stuck in those oldschool days, or maybe I just care too much, but it does indeed rub me the wrong way...
I'm not sure why but I never really minded being stereotyped or labeled. Honestly, if someone isn't going to talk to me just because I fit some stereotype or another, they probably fit a stereotype I wouldn't get along with in the first place...

...I probably sound like an awful person when this is put into written words. ^^;

People label others, claim indifference, and yet are very defensive/senesitive. stare Kinda tricky how it all works. xp

Labels serve to assist in organizing and understanding the world. I don't think we can really escape the idea of a label. The fact we call ourselves humans is a label. The word 'fact' is a label. Names are labels. Labels assist in constructing reality that is easier to understand. Without labels we wouldn't even speak, I would think.

With labels we compare things to one another, like 'me' versus 'you.' Hell, even just understanding the 'self' impliments labels. I guess like some philosophers, I believe we cannot escape our language, or our limited point of view. I think labels serve their purpose, and they can help a lot when it comes to talking about complex subjects. For instance, is it better that when we talk about gravity we describe every single aspect (which could be a whole book worth of description really - perhaps a trilogy, maybe more), or that we just label all this description 'gravity' so that when we step up to talk about things that are connected to gravity we don't have to constantly dip back into a huge epic-length description.

I think where many go wrong, though, is when they get bogged down in labels. Labels are something to be used, not something to be limited by. Some may see Goth as a limit and boundary set upon their Self, but in reality they are creating those limits. Not the label really. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Goth as a label is useful for giving a general description of a group of people who share some likeness. Where we go wrong is when we percieve the label as a limit.

I could just be a rambling pingu though.

I see that you have something to say so ill reply to your post.
Yes labeling makes things alot easier but no one can properly describe something with out giving it more than one label. For Ex. if they labeled (the entire band) Depeche Mode either Christian or Goth when they first started making music back in the 80's would anyone that fitted one of the labels actually research the band if it were labeled the other?
Remember this is back when the whole Satanist, baby-eater thing was started by stereotyping, self-righteous, holier than thou Catholics, Christians and who would have kicked alot of the people in this guild out of their church for attempting to overturn the church and its beliefs. And they are not much different now.
