I don't know where y'all are getting "ya'll", but it's spelled y'all.

It's a contraction of "you all"; how the hell are you finding an 'a' in the word "you"? It ain't there.

A bunch of people write ya instead of you, ya know?

That's something that I would consult a literature book about, since it's kind of a tricky contraction. I see how what you put makes sense, however, since it is a contraction of "you all", and it wouldn't make sense to put the 'A' with the 'Y'.

Consult a dictionary, then.

y'all /yɔl/

you-all.

I've been saying the same thing for years . . . seeing as how it's a word I use in everyday conversation.

I find it interesting that in several languages, the translation of "y'all" is a traditional, perfectly acceptable pronoun, but if I use it in English class, I'm in violation of her rules.

'tis 'cause the correct 2nd person plural pronoun is "you", and the correct 2nd person singular pronoun is "thou".

I think that every one should stop abbreviating alltogether.

So forth:

didn't - did not and so on and so forth.

It's "y'all", and you use it when referring to a group of people, not a single person.

I do not like being referred to as a whole group.

Oh dear. I must admit to having spelled it "ya'll", but I can definitely see how that would be wrong. Even Firefox is highlighting it. When I type "y'all", it doesn't highlight it.

Generally though, it's not a word I use. It's fine for those in whose dialect it's a common word, but it's not something I grew up with.

Don't they use this word in Canada as a greeting?

I'm sorry, but you're generalising a hell of a lot there, and there's little need for it.

Where am I generalising, pray tell?

Another spelling error.

People, its generalizing with a 'z'. Unfortunately there is no word as generalising.
