The thing is that I wonder why there are those who try to act/say that they are "hxc" for any kind of musical subculture. Honestly, if you listen to the bands/artists of that genre and find an interest in/participate in the subculture of it, then that's it - there's no hierarchy.
But why do I have to hear some kid say something along the lines of:
"You'll never understand the darkness and pain that resides inside my soul... because you'll never be so hardcore a goth as me"
or
"Scars run up and down my arms, much like the feet of preps run up and down my body. I'm such a hardcore emo"

stare
True, the "hxc goth" is probably listening to too much Evanescence and the "hxc emo" wouldn't know how to respond if you said anything about Embrace...

But the sad thing is that this also happens with people who do know true goth rock or true emo rock... thankfully it doesn't happen as often as it does with the exaggerated examples above, but it does happen. It could just be with the unbalanced ratio of Bauhaus and Siouxsie fans to today's world of HIM lovers and Mansonites, which could cause someone of the former to think they are above the others, but I'm curious as to what you guys think.

IMO, hardcore is a more aggressive form of punk rock, not some badge to prove that you're better than someone.

Although I am neither a Goth nor an emo, I know what you mean when you say that. I have a couple of Goth/emo friends and most of them are always trying to make out that they are better than the others. I think it's probably just something to do with human nature, most people always want to be 'better' than others.

True, it could be that... just another form of competition to some, if that's what you're getting at. smile

Basically yeah. And a twisted form of entertainment to those of us that watch from the sidelines.

Well, from the sidelines it could be either a twisted form of entertainment, or something that causes you to sigh, hang your head, and rub your sinuses (if I didn't feel the latter, I wouldn't have made this thread rolleyes )

Yes, that is true. The only reason that our reactions differ in this respect is I don't see it often so it is always a learning experience. I have that same reaction around gamers (being a gamer myself).

The best thing I ever heard said about being hardcore was said my an elderly confused jewish gentleman.
"I'm sorry, the only hardcore I know is in reference to pornography."

What I think is going on is the people who claim themselves as "hardcore" are the people who think that they are more into the 'activities' of the subculture than other people who claim it. For example, a person who claims themselves as "hardcore emo" does cutting and more extreme things that define emo, like a total epitome. Then someone who is not hardcore just dresses, and to a lesser extent, acts the role, is only merely in the subculture. So in the end, the hardcore are trying create a hierarchy to make it look like what they are doing is in fact better than the people who are just take part of the subculture.
