There is no excuse for the use of text talk in forums. Forums are generally fairly slow, so I think people should put more thought and effort into their posts.

If you have more then thirty seconds to respond I implore you to respond with words. If you have less than that by all means butcher the English language.

Not on forums... I do use it for instant messaging though, simply out of habit and to save a bit of time when it's only smalltalk.
I think "cya" has become part of my vocabulary thanks to that. >.>

How can it possibly be necessary?

Not in forums, but in online chat it's a bit different - and I tend to use a lot more netspeak if I'm typing there.
When it's informal conversational text, some abbreviations of phrases (eg: wtf, idk, omg) are okay in my opinion. I don't understand why people would abbreviate words such as "later" into "l8r" though unless they're texting on a mobile.

I certainly don't think it's necessary. I'm a touch typist and have no need for shortcuts. It's a pain to type properly on my cell phone, but I do it there too.

I think the only place text talk should be used is on cell phones. The only reason this is acceptable is if your reader will understand and because it can save you money.

I think text talk is nessacary for only those who no long have the ability to type out their damn words! Otherwise, text talk should only be used in IM or email. Stuff like that.

Demon Red_666 I don't think it's necessary, unless your are texting on your cellphone. What I think is more neccesary than 'txt-tlk' is proper spacing. OH, THE IRONY. I'M GOING TO FAINT OVER A SOFA NOW.

Not in forums. In PMs or cell phone texts, yes.
