i first heard the term goth when i began studying my ancestors (both visigoth and ostragoth). This of course was a long time ago, i was about 9 or 10 not to sure. I came across a few articles on the goth subculture and to be honest it startled me at first, this was of course due to the bad sterotypes that were in the article. I put it aside and didn't think much of it. Then as time went on i became darker, more vile, more angry. This of course was my gothic puberty or me going through the baby bat stage. As it went on i came to realise that it wasn't goth at all, it was just being a poser. So i calmed myself down an tried to find myself. Here i am today, i listen to opera, i go to plays, i am inspired heavily by medieval, victorian and even ancient Gothic things. I appreciate all aspects of life, even the darker things and i find beauty in the darker things of life and the stranger things of life.
To me that is what a true goth is, not someone who wears baggy pants and is obssessed with death and hate the world, that's just and angsty punk in my mind.

I don't want to put myself in a box, but there are certain behaviours, interests, and attitudes which I posess, and consider to be somewhat 'gothic', mind you many of these things can be categorized as other things as well, such as 'intellectual', 'artistic', or 'cultured'. However, here's my stance on the situation...
No one is purely a goth, just like no one is purely an artist. There are some aspects of the lifestyle which may have a strong hold on how you experience life, but it isn't the pure controlling factor of ones life. I am an artist. That makes me very aware of light, color, expression, texture, and whatnot. Art is important to me, but that dosn't mean that I am solely an artist, just like my affinity to the gothic subculture dosn't make me solely a goth.
As for 'what is goth'? I suppose it is all in the eye of the beholder.
To me it lies in many areas of life, and encompasses many tendancies I posessed far before I started dressing in black velvet and listening to Dead Can Dance. To me goth is about intellectualism and the ability to percieve things in a way which many cannot. It means that you can find beauty in things which many people fear. It involves a certain level of introspection as well. I spend a lot of time alone in reflection. I feel that I know myself byfar better than how well most people know themselves. Goth, in my opinion, emphasiazes intellectualism and a love of the arts and literature. It also has a sort of hypocritical and humorus aspect to it. One reason I am so comfortable with the gothic mentality is that I reject a lot of the standards and ideals of society (ex. sterotypical gender roles, capitalism, the odd decorum that humans are supposed to keep, etc.), so I tend to mingle with alternative branches of society... goths, artists, intellectuals, devoute communists/socialists/anarchists... branches which have formed thier own set of societal rules, values, and hierarchies. It's sort of like saying "I reject your reality and substitute it with my own".
