I was was reading in the current Creative Knitting about a Mock Cable Dishcloth by Kathy Wesley which follows...

Materials
*worsted weight cotton yarn (95 yds/ 56g per skein): 1 skein seashore #02024
*size 7 (4.5 mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge
12sts= 2inches in pat
(Exact gauge is not critical to this project.)

CF(Cable Front): Skip first st on LH needle, knit in front of 2nd st; then knit first st, sl both sts off needle at the same time

Dishcloth

Cast on 50 sts
row 1 (rs); P2, *k2, p2; rep from across.
row 2: P2, *p2, k2; rep from * to last 4 sts, p4
row 3: P2, *CF, p2; rep from * across
row 4: Rep Row 2
Rep rows 1-4 for pat until cloth measure approx 8 1/2 inches, ending with Row 1. Bind off all sts in pat.

well it's not a stitch pattern but i hope everyone enjoys! 3nodding

Seed Stitch:
Row 1: K1, P1
Row 2: K1, P1

Fishnet Stitch:
Row 1: YO, K2Tog
Row 2: K across

I am a beginner, self taught knitter and I dont know what all of these abbreviations mean or if i know how to do them. I think it might be a useful topic that has the abbreviations and either a description of the stitch/technique or a link. Would a more experienced knitter be willing to do that????

I might do it if I can find the time...but since I'm really busy it might take a little while...

As a Crocheter with the same issue, I went out and bought the Stitch n' b***h Happy hooker and it has great explinations for everything. I assume the original stuch n' b***h for knitting has many of the same sorts of explinations, but for knitting.

I can't remember what it's called but it's cool:

Cast on even # of stitches
1. K1, P1, K1, P1....
2. K1, P1, K1, P1...
3. P1, K1, P1, K1...
4. P1, K1, P1, K1

Not really a stitch, but it's a really fun 'pattern' is the welt stitch. It creates raised welts and then valleys, kinda like horizontal ribbing. especially fun if you "hide" a contrast color in the valleys.

One color:

Row 1: Purl (right side)
Row 2: Knit (wrong side)
Row 3: Purl (right side)
Row 4: Knit (wrong side)
Row 5: Knit (right side)
Row 6: Purl (wrong side)

repeat for as long as you like.

For two colors knit rows 1-4 in your main color and rows 5 and 6 in your contrast, change back to main and repeat

Moss stitch, if I'm not mistaken. I like that one.

Why not check out a library? I can pretty much guarantee that they have a couple of stitch dictionaries there. Knitting books should be around 736 in the dewey decimal system, if I remember correctly there, too. 3nodding

If it's not 736, then it might be 747. Regardless, you'd definitely find them in the 700s. domokun

Quote:
Cast on a multiple of 10 + 6 extra stitches. (16, 26, 36...)

Row 1-2: knit across

3: Knit 6, * yarn over twice, k 1, YO3, k1, YO 4, k1, YO3, k1 YO2, k6
Repeat from * as many times needed.

4: knit all and drop the yarn overs

5-6: knit across

7: k1 repeat from * on row 3. Finish the last repeat with k1

8: knit all and drop YOs.

9-10 knit across.

Rinse and repeat smile This gives a nice wavy pattern. It will look really strange around row 4 or so but give it a try.

YO = yarn over = wrap the warn around the knitting needle
