I Shall Not Forget
I watched as the sun glistened in the sea,
The preposterous idea dawned on me,
The graceful waves swallow me whole,
There is no escape from this hole,
The tragic loss of all those lives,
Sorrow endured by endless wives,
Children and elders know too well,
Why their eyes continue to swell,
They once had faithful company,
Now all is left is agony,
Mighty men disappear,
Strong men we held so dear,
In our eyes they were the best,
But now, where do their souls rest,
Once in battle, they fire their guns,
Their target is those destructive Huns,
Sometimes, our brave men gain victory,
A positive change in history,
On occasion, they lose and retreat,
Failure causing their gloom hearts to beat,
None the less, there is a shed of blood,
Which continues like an endless flood,
Fields and fields full of bodies lying dead,
This fatal epidemic will be spread,
Courageous men who decide not to stay,
May not live to see another long day,
Patriotic men stand up and fight,
Standing proud and tall, concealed by light,
They will forever battle in this war,
Never daring to stop the mighty oar,
They dream of ending up as a hero,
Yet, most soldiers have nothing and zero,
In the end, a person prevails,
As a result, a person fails,
There are loud and jubilant cheers,
Then, there are quivering tears,
When this war finally ends,
Millions lose precious friends,
Hearts broken and torn apart,
Feelings hurt at the very start,
Families now no longer together,
Emotions of joy now lost forever,
So, on each and every Remembrance’s Day,
Search in your memories for this to say,
“I thank you for your courage, and your act of no regret,”
“For as long as I live, your battle I shall not forget.”
--------------Poet's Note--------------------
I made this poem for a school assignment. At first, I had no idea on what to write about. Then, I just suddenly came up with the idea of composing something relating to Remembrance Day. All my verses are my original ideas, so, please do not copy. Oh, and I worked really hard on it. Comments are welcome and appreciated!
