I highly, highly, highly reccomend the His Dark Materials trilogy. The first book in it is The Golden Compass (called Northern Lights if you live in the UK). It's awesome! A bit more philosophical and serious than Harry Potter (more serious in that there is less humor in the books), but a great fantasy novel series all the same.
