Volumes [manga] Status in Japan :: complete at 14 volumes Status in US :: 14/14 released
Volume 1: Aya Aya and her twin brother Aki thought they were going to a celebration of their sixteenth birthday at their grandfather's home, but the funeral-like atmosphere tips them off that something's not right. Their "birthday present" turns out to be a mummified hand--the power of which forces an awakening within Aya, and painful wounds all over Aki's body! Grandfather Mikage announces that Aki will be heir to the Mikage fortune, and Aya must die! But Aya has allies in the athletic cook and martial artist Yûhi, and the attractive, mysterious Tôya. But can even two handsome and resourceful guys save Aya when it's her own power that's out of control?
Volume 2: Yûhi Yûhi, a relatively popular guy at his school, has his life interrupted by the ominous premonition of his beautiful sister-in-law, Suzumi. She sends him to rescue spunky Aya Mikage, who is under a death sentence by her own family! Suzumi relegates Yûhi to protect the high-spirited coed, but he doesn't know that two personalities dwell within Aya's body--herself and the legendary celestial maiden, Ceres! Yûhi complains about Aya all the time, but gets jealous when the handsome mystery man Tôya is around. Could it be that he actually has feelings for Aya?
Volume 3: Suzumi Suzumi, a prim and proper instructor of traditional Japanese dance, has a demure exterior but a confident, strong interior. She's also a descendant of a tennyo (celestial maiden). Her powers are nowhere near as powerful as Ceres' but Suzumi senses Aya is a kindred spirit and proves to be one of her most valuable allies. Suzumi takes Aya into her home, unwittingly putting herself in just as much danger as Aya!
Volume 4: Chidori Chidori Kuruma wants to help her sickly younger brother fulfill his dream of flying. In order to do so, she travels to Tokyo to enlist the aid of Ceres. Unfortunately, Chidori and her brother have a strange connection to the Mikage family and the nefarious C-Project. There's much more to Chidori than meets the eye. Her hyper-cheerful shôjo exterior belies inner turmoil and dark secrets that even Chidori isn't aware of...
Volume 5: Mikage Grandfather Mikage is the head of the extended Mikage family as well as the leader of the multinational conglomerate, Mikage International. His family has maintained great power and wealth under his strict rule--creating a regime founded on a belief in supernatural magic and ritual murder. Grandfather Mikage has selected his grandson, Aki, to lead the family into the future. But, his chosen successor may have more in store for the family than Grandpa bargained for...
Volume 6: Shuro Celebrities say all kinds of outragious things, don't they? But when Shuro--one half of Japan's hottest pop duo, GeSang--says on national television that not only is he the descendant of a ten'nyo celestial maiden, but that his family also still has in its possession the ten'nyo's celestial robe or hagoromo, Aya and the others spring into action! There's more waiting for them in Okinawa than sold-out concerts and sightseeing, though. Shuro's claims of celestial heritage may be more than just PR spin. Kei (the other half of GeSang) may feel more for his partner than friendship. And Kagami--still plotting away at his nefarious "C-Project"--may be closer to achieving his goals than anyone thinks...
Volume 7: Maya Hell hath no fury...or, in this case, Heaven, as it's a celestial maiden or "ten'nyo" who's unleashing it! The search for Ceres' hagoromo or "celestial robes" brings the action back to Tokyo--to Miyagi, specifically, where rumors of a spectral white dog ("figuring in the celestial legend!," says Suzumi) prompt a transfer to girls-only high school for Aya, Chidori, and...Yûhi?! Connected to the dog's increasingly frequent attacks is a sweet and popular girl named Maya Hirobe, but why--and more importantly, how--is she involved? Is it possible that Maya is a C-Genome...and doesn't even know it?
Volume 8: Miori No more deception, no more lies--now that Aya and Tôya have finally let down all their barriers and come together, that is. But will something else--something outside their love--tear them apart? Miori Sahara seems a nice enough girl--goes to Aya's school, has a lot in common with Aya...looks a lot like Aya, actually. She says she's searching for her missing boyfriend, who's been gone a year now. After an accident robs Tôya of his memories, will Aya turn to Yûhi once Tôya goes back to his "real" girlfriend, Miori? A love like Aya and Tôya's is supposed to last forever...has everything that's happened between the two of them this past year been a lie after all?!
Volume 9: Progenitor Shocked to learn (from Aki, of all people!) that the entire "Tôya Mizuki" personality is false--a fiction, a cipher without a past of any kind--Tôya struggles to find his own identity. If he doesn't know who he is, how can he help Aya? Elsewhere, while Aya recedes into herself, heartbroken and distraught over her separation with Tôya, Ceres must deal with a bitter and increasingly mad Miori, who blames Aya for everything. Will Aya emerge and face Miori's accusations...or leave her to Ceres? Later, Aki--still fully possessed by the "progenitor," the forefather of all the Mikage--launches a new scheme to claim Aya...his woman.
Volume 10: Monster Their search for the celestial robes or "hagoromo" resumed, Aya and Yûhi transfer to (yet another) new school. But, here, their problems are more serious than just making new friends. Aki--or, should we say, the "Progenitor"--is on campus and making Aya's life hell. And then there's a kind of actual hell itself, in the form of a beneath-school passageway, where a...creature...is said to roam. Is there any truth to Aki's claim that the monster is the daughter of a priest who made the grave error of angering a celestial maiden or "ten'nyo" hundreds of years ago...? Speaking of ten'nyo, Aya has vowed to never release Ceres again. But Aki has made his own vow...and he will claim Ceres--his woman--one way or the other....
Volume 11: Maiden Reunited with her beloved in both passion and purpose, Aya decides to join Tôya in the quest for his real memories. A visit to an island where Aya spent a summer in childhood promises one of their first real leads to that end--turns out Aya and Tôya met long before, back when she was a little girl with a seashell, and when he...looked just exactly the same as he does now! Despite not knowing who or even what Tôya may be, the two decide to travel back to kindly Doctor Kurozuka in Niigata Prefecture to make a life for themselves there. But Kagami is still on the hunt for Ceres' hagoromo, and is in fact even closer to it than ever before. For every great advance, there must be an equally great sacrifice--how will Chidori figure into it?
Volume 12: Tôya The impenetrable haze of Tôya's amnesia has always kept his past shrouded in mystery...until now, as his elusive memories begin to return. There was the island...the girl with the seashell...the name "Mikage." Tôya and the others go into full rescue mode in response to Aki's latest threats, facing gunfire, torture, and even death...but Aya faces life--new life. The hideous details of Kagami's "C-Project" make what was already an awful situation all but unbearable. How can anyone expect Aya to go on without her love, her life, her other self? Oh, Tôya....
Volume 13: Tennyo Escorted about the facilities of the C-Project laboratories like the prize Mikage breeding-stock she is, Ceres uses the existence of Tôya's child, now thriving inside her, to taunt the monomaniacal Kagami. An outraged Kagami tries to kill Ceres, but will another's sacrifice be enough to protect this "First Mother" of all Celestial Maidens? Aya, initially horrified by Ceres' claim to be "no different" than her relative, Kagami, eventually receives from Ceres the truth--about the past, about how things really were between her and the Progenitor...and about the shocking nature of the mysterious ten'nyo or "celestial maidens" themselves.
Volume 14: Hagoromo The C-Project has abandoned its shattered home base and relocated to a backup facility aboard an ocean liner. Kagami still has Ceres/Aya and the lab-created hagoromo--the celestial robes--but now he faces a new challenge to his ambitions: the return of Tôya! This, however, is not just the miraculous resurrection of Aya's beloved, but the culmination of an age-old process that brings the long and difficult search for the hagoromo to a startling conclusion. No one whose life has been touched by the seemingly hapless yet ultimately indomitable Aya Mikage will be unaffected--provided anyone survives the deadly attack of a fully reborn Progenitor!
