I know that when you're talking about your own life, life is a singular noun but is it suppose to be plural when you refer to life in general?

For example:

"My life is great." (singular)

"If life was like that..." OR "If life were like that..."

I think "life was" is in reference to a single life, while "life were" is usually only one's self or a broad scope. Just my thoughts.

When you say "if life were", it is in the subjunctive mood, which is used for situations where your sentence is unlikely to happen. For a situation that is possible, you use "if life was".

Read more about it here.

Holy bran muffins,

I can't believe it! French class just saved my butt. I understood every word The MoUsY spell-checker said!

Think- If I was - I think that's conditional
If I were- subjunctive.

Amazing. I paid attention. cool

I did French for four years when I was at school too. I didn't really like it that much when I had to do it, so I dropped it when I started year 11, and I wish I didn't.

Holy cow, I took French for 11 years and I didn't even learn that.
I did, however, learn it in one year of Grammar in college. It was always something I had wondered about and even now I wonder if I'm occasionally misusing "was" and "were" in the described situations.

Haha... ouch, your poll split into even thirds. sweatdrop
I think that it's singular in this sentence, because it's referring to a singular idea.
