Once, there was a rich merchant's daughter who lived in a desert town.
She had been arranged to marry her friend of many, many years. As a merchant's daughter, she got used to a certian lifestyle that her husband couldn't give her. But he was always kind and thoughtful, and she loved him as only a friend could love him. It was a tender, thoughtful relationship, but with no riches or power.
One day, she was taken by a powerful lord who saw her and thought her the most beautiful woman in the world. He took her to his palace and gave her jewels, silks, anything she could ever want. But she never had time to talk to him and become a friend to him. It was a rich, powerful relationship, but with no tenderness or love.
So the girl ran ran away, into the oasis where the water ran clear, and there was something magical about the place. She cried hard and long, untill an elvin prince came to her side. For a few weeks, she lived in happiness with the prince. He gave her trinkets and gems, and they sat up together at night, looking at the stars and reading each other's futures.
The girl's father had been looking for her this entire time and when he found her wandering alone in the oasis, he took her to the court, leaving a message for the elvin prince on a tree. He gave the same message to a royal guard and to his son in law: "Come to the courthouse to settle who is her husband."
So they all went.
The husband said "I can give you love and friendship, but not riches."
The lord said "I can give you riches and power, but I will not have time to be with you."
The young elf said "I can not only give you anything you desire, but I will be your friend for all eternity."
The girl's father said, "Pick one, my child, and I will support you and your husband." So the girl looked around the courtroom and said to them "I will pick the elvin prince, because he was there in a moment of my life that I couldn't see which way was up. He is my light. I am sorry, friend, that I must leave you."
With that, the girl and the elvin prince went back into the oasis and lived throught the ages in peace with nature and each other.
