Van sighed a bit and sat back uneasily at his table for one, torn between jumping up and leaving this city now and finishing the coffee he paid for. On one hand, Venice was boring him like any other city eventually does. On the other, money was hard to come by for him, and he might as well not waste what he earned. Besides, the coffee he ordered wasn't half bad. It was strong, eye-poppingly so, but Van wouldn't drink it any other way.
A moment later Van made the decision to drain the half-cup of steaming strong coffee. The heat and strength didn't faze him at all, and he stood up to leave seconds later. "Finally free of this wretched city," he said to himself, but took care to say so in english. He wondered if anyone around him bothered to overhear him, let alone understand his statement. He didn't care, anyway.
He hurried down the stairs and found himself waist-deep in water before his eyes noticed the flooded downstairs. He caught the railing tightly, as if he would fall over and drown otherwise, and stood there for a moment in wide-eyes shock. "How the hell am I supposed to get out of here now?" he wondered. There was no way he'd be able to navigate that labyrinth of a city, especially not at night. Slowly, he turned around and started up the stairs again. "It's flooded down there," he called out in Italian to nobody in particular, his voice stunned. He closed his eyes and made his way back to the table, trying to make sense of the situation and what he would do about leaving.
