First off, I'd like to define geek, and explain the differences between a geek... and a nerd.
Geeks, have all sorts of things they obsess over. Theatre, video games, writing, cooking shows, comics, anime, computers, broadcasting, and a whole mess of other possible interests.
Nerds. While geeking it out may be a habit of theirs, if you're enjoying math and all of that computer mumbo-jumbo that barely anyone understands, you're nerding it up.
It's possible to be both... I'm not. I'm a geek. I'd rather leave math to just about anyone else. Now then... to the point.
Star Trek. No, I'm not going to talk about the movie, or the items in the Gee Boi Turbos. I'm talking about two very special captains. Kirk, and Picard. I happened to catch Next Generation earlier today, and expressed to my mother that I liked Picard. She proceeded to call me crazy. Fine. My father also said Kirk. Fine. I posed the question to one of my net friends... here is where the geek rage goes into effect.
My friend chose Kirk... because he had never heard of Picard. He's never seen "Next Generation." I was surprised. I mean, he'd seen the oldest, but not a newer one!?
Personally, the original is a little hokey... I'm not a Trekkie or anything, but I like the shows. I'll watch them if they happen to be on. Just... interrupting with my own opinion...
Anywho, in my shock, I try and explain who Jean-luc Picard is... with "B-b-but he's Professor Xavier!"
His reply? "Nothing."
After the initial horror had worn off, and I'd asked if he'd ever heard of X-men, it changed to "Oh him... His name is Charles though not what you said... Or Prof. X."
I told him the X stands for Xavier.
"Oh, I thought you were talking about someone off of Star Trek... Out of Kirk and X I'd have to choose Deadpool."
I'd never even heard of Deadpool. But this... THIS is where geek rage set in. I'd spent 10 minutes to explain who Picard was, and instead got lip when I had to take the time to Wiki this "Deadpool". I had to explain... slowly... that Picard and Xavier had the same actor. He continued on to tell me that Deadpool was "Kinda weird like that, famous yet not famous." But I was far too busy trying to figure out why he was changing the subject to some weird spin-off. Then... he shared this little gem, straight out of the blue.
"By the way. Patrick Stewart -.-"
I'll admit. I had to ask who he was. I am HORRIBLE with names. It takes me a while to learn them, and I don't care enough about actors to take the time and/or effort to do so. I know character names.
When I expressed my confusion, he said, "He was another Xavior... I'll just stick to Spawn..."
So, I wikied him, trying to figure out what was going on. And to my surprise, saw the man I'd just spent twenty minutes talking about, smiling back at me. "... What do you mean "another"!? That's who I've been talking bout this entire time!"
He went "*Eye twitch*". My eye... PHYSICALLY twitched as my geek rage hit a new level. " gonk Who did you THINK I was talking about!?"
"Some random guy..."
And that my friends, is my sad little exchange. All because I wanted to know if a friend liked Picard, or Kirk better. It's left me exhausted, and actually caused me to do a journal entry, so I would not have to bear my burden alone. Good luck, and thank you for your time. stare
