Y'know, letting all them shoddy WIP pics going to waste would kinda suck, SO! I've decided to show people that are interested a little insight into the process I go through when making a pic.
Concept I knew off the bat I wanted something ominous and epic, and on a huge scale... so of course I went with Stoney. I grabbed a fistful of flash cards since normal paper wasn't on hand, and set to doodling a scene that I had playing in my mind for quite a while:
This was the first sketch I did of it, and sort of liked how it was panning out. Yeah, this is how a lot of mine start. Scribbles. ._.;
The second sketch was slightly more refined, with somethings added and changed. Now that I had a halfway decent setup, it was time to start refining! After getting them onto my computer via my Digicam, I busted open Photoshop and began working:
Forgive the blue, but that's normally how I work. I'll do rough sketches in varying colors depending on how detailed it is (because half the time I forget what goes where, and need to color code everything. XD Anyway, yeah, it's a step up from the faildoodles.
Next came the lines / inks. Despite it being all black, it was done on different layers due to the fact that I'm paranoid about messing certain things up. I also added a third Coatl at a wonky perspective because all that black was bugging me.
And so begins the flats! Of course I jumped the gun and decided to play around with the Spirit Pyres which I remembered to add, and the Coatl's glowy mouth. Each color is on its own layer, and once I get things suitable I lock transparency so I don't screw it up. XD
He looks a bit bright, right? Well, that will change soon enough.
Flats are done for everything at this point, including the little Coatls. They appear darker than Stoney at this point because of the Hard Light layer of dark grayish-blue I have visible. I also stopped to treat myself, and decided to play around with some of the ring effects.
And done! I thought I had far more WIP pics in between, but I suppose I don't. D8 I had to go back in and add a purple glow to things nearest the pyres, since it looked pretty strange otherwise. Said Glow effects were usually on layers set to Screen or those above the shadowed layers, to give it far more contrast.
I lost track of layers during this project, but I know there's around 30 or so at least. It seems like a lot, but I've had projects with far more in the past. oAo;
All in all I REALLY had fun with this. Like, majorly.
