So it's sink or swim when it comes to earning gold on Gaia (because you sure as hell can't get by with earning gold the old way only) and I chose to swim - with the fishes of course!
Now that I've played Booty Grab quite a bit (I can get a haul of 10K in around 15 minutes or so), I've learned a few tips which I'd like to share.
Though... I wonder if anyone ever reads other people's journals.
Anyways!
Onwards!
In all honesty, the main winner in all of this is TIMING. To do well in Booty Grab, you need to learn how to TIME everything otherwise, even the best-stocked tank isn't going to do much for you.
So how do we work on timing?
1) FAMILIARIZE yourself with how your computer and browser handles Booty Grab
What is the 'speed' of things? Is there lag? When does the lag occur? What can you do to prevent or cure the lag?
Such things are crucial to letting you time your movements properly as you go back and forth in the tank, collecting gold (and sometimes items) all the while.
2) WATCH FOR PATTERNS in how the modifiers move through the tank
The modifiers are those bonuses (or minuses) that can be found floating in the tank as you grab Booty. It is what that countdown screen is talking about and you better learn how to watch for and then time the patterns of the modifiers if you want to get the gold!
If you can time the patterns of the RED modifiers which do things like shrink your Overseer (the clamshell on your head), deduct from your time (NOOO!), deduct from your gold (ACK!), and slow you down (molasses!), then you can avoid getting hit by things that will inhibit your ability to catch Booty.
On the other hand, if you can time the patterns of the BLUE modifiers which do things like make your Overseer grow (whoa!), add to your time (YESSS!), multiply your gold (heck yeah!), then you can easily add to your Booty haul...
which leads me to my third point.
3) CHOOSE your modifiers wisely
I've had tanks which dropped 3+ modifiers on me all at once which left me scrambling and doing crazy mental calculations on which ones I should aim for and which ones I needed to avoid.
Case in point:
I see an Overseer modifier floating my way, but at the same time, a Time Deduction modifier is riiight behind it. Do I go for the Overseer modifier?
If I can get to it and scramble backwards and then dodge it, yes. If not, nevermind. I will pay attention to dodging Time Deduction and leave the Overseer to do as it will.
Another case in point:
There is a Slow Down modifier coming my way from one direction and a Speed Increase modifier coming from the other. The Slow Down modifier is under a bunch of dolphins who are happily showering me with red coins while the Speed Increase modifier is under a shower of more regular coins. What do I do?
In this case, since the dolphins are quite happily staying put, I can afford to slow down a bit in the interest of staying under the shower of red coins. If it were a Time Deduction, however, no thanks!
So yeah.
Prioritizing your modifiers in accordance to your Booty Grab scenario can and will make a difference in your Booty Grab haul.
With that said, there you have it - 3 main guidelines to improve your Booty Grabbing abilities!

For kicks, I will add a last bit about lag.
We all hate lag.
I especially hate lag because I have an older machine I frequently use owing to all of its other positive points.
For this reason, I have learned to cope and deal with the lag and have used it to my advantage via timing.
For those of you who experience lag when opening up Booty Grab, try minimizing the other browsing windows OR minimizing the Booty Grab window.
Viewing the Aquariums in low quality can help and it can also help to shrink the size of the Aquarium if possible.
In my case, all of the above helps and the minimization seems to help the most - especially with the tanks whose fish have a lot of additional animation.
So give the advice a shot if you're having problems, hmmm?
