She's the newest name and face in pop music, most notable for the fact that she's literally an everyday teenager who pretty much made a music video for fun and posted it on youtube. Her single "Friday" unexpectedly went viral and generated upwards of a couple thousand dollars in advertising revenue on youtube.
I have listened to the song and watched the video. I have to say I was underwhelmed. It was ok, but nothing spectacular. Rebecca's voice and "stage presence" are about average. I don't think she would have made it past the second round on a show like "American Idol" or "The Voice" and I'm not sure why it became such a hit in the first place. "Friday" got annoyingly repetitive about two minutes in; I couldn't even finish watching it.
The video also sparked a lot of feedback in the format of comments, from positive statements like "I love it you're amazing" to extremely negative like "you're ugly and you should kill yourself." I don't think it is ever justified to tell a person they should kill themselves, especially over something as innocuous as a video on youtube.com, of all places. EVER.
She has since signed a record deal and released another single, "My Moment." My opinion on that is that it's a better song than "Friday." I actually like the song itself; it's a good message about being proud of beating the odds even in spite of all the "haters." The video, on the other hand, I'm not so sure of. It comes off as Rebecca arrogantly bragging about her success, thumbing her nose at the people who didn't like her first song. I have mixed feelings about it. It seems really immature to me, basically going "Nyah, nyah, look what I got, bitches!" and then I remember the girl's still in high school, and is entitled to a little immaturity now again. In light of that, the fact that she put another song out there is impressive, considering she opened herself to more hateful comments like the ones before. It's kind of admirable, really.
Is Rebecca Black the next big name in music? I don't think so. Her singing talent is average and her performances are, well, the same. In her recent video "My Moment" there's a big dance scene, and if I didn't know what she looked like already, I couldn't have told you who the star of the video was supposed to be. There's nothing particularly exceptional about her, performance-wise. Any person who can carry a tune could perform her songs as competently as she does, unlike say, Alicia Keys. She doesn't command the attention of the audience even when the camera's centered directly on her, and she doesn't possess any other exceptional performing skills such as dancing (like Shakira, for example).
I wish her all the best, but I think she will be no more than a blip on the world of music. In my opinion, she's already on her way out.
