• Aries was a regular ram that Nephele (Cloud Goddess) turned into a human to watch over her children Phrixus and Helle after Athamas became enamored with Ino and banished Nephele from Orchomenus.
• Phrixus and Helle grew up with Aries watching over them and protecting them from Ino's many assassination attempts.
• Phrixus and Aries were particularly close and were sometimes confused about their feelings for each other.
• After overhearing Ino's plan to trick Athamas into sacrificing Phrixus, Aries was advised by Nephele to escape with Phrixus and Helle to Cholchis.
• At night the three escaped the city gates but were soon chased by Ino's guards. Aries transformed into his winged-ram beast and carried the two on his back.
• One of Ino's guards was skilled in the art of archery and managed to shoot an arrow into Aries' fleece, which became stuck and would cut into his stomach when he flew. However, the guard's second shot struck Helle's left shoulder and she fell into the sea.
• Phrixus begged Aries to stop but he refused as it was too dangerous.
• When Aries and Phrixus arrived in Colchis, Phrixus expressed how angered and disappointed he was with Aries for not stopping to save his sister. At this point Aries confesses his feelings and the only thought he had on his mind was to save Phrixus.
• King Aeetes sends his guards to retrieve Phrixus and Aries as he was already expecting their arrival.
• Once brought towards Aeetes, the two are informed that Nephele had made a deal with Aeetes that he would allow Phrixus and Helle to live in Colchis and let the former marry his eldest daughter in exchange for the Golden Fleece.
• Phrixus is told that he must sacrifice Aries if he wishes to stay in Colchis and marry Aeetes' daughter.
• Phrixus of course refuses.
• Upon hearing this, Aeetes is insulted and enraged. He orders Phrixus to be executed and for Aries to be chained to a great oak tree.
• Aries struggles to protect Phrixus as he is held down by Aeetes' guards and is still injured from the archer. Phrixus is no match for Aeete's swordsmen and before he is stabbed through the chest he tells Aries that he had always loved him too.

• Ten years later, Jason arrives in Colchis to claim the Golden Fleece.
