The first day I officially joined Gaia was July 20, 2007. I created the account hibiki3360 which later became Kaizoku Jotei Boa Hancock. Gaia was new and exciting to me. I remember the first item that I was determined to get was the Fairy Wings. They cost 40,000 gold at the time, which was very expensive back then, but I was ready to work hard to get them. I don't remember how long it took, but I eventually got them.
The next item I wanted was the Angelic Pendant. It was a collectible item that I had no chance to get due to the cost in the Marketplace, but I remained hopeful. When I finally got it the price in the Marketplace was around 900,000 gold. By then, Gaia cash had been implemented.
In a way, I am indebted to Gaia Cash for making it possible for me to get many rare items that were only sold in the Marketplace. I would buy something with Gaia Cash, and then I would sell it for some ridiculous amount of gold in the Marketplace to people who either couldn't afford Gaia Cash or weren't allowed to purchase it. Doing that allowed me to buy the items I wanted, but what I didn't realize was the effect Gaia Cash would have on the site later on.
The Gaia Cash system, much like the poisonous Federal Reserve in America, gave birth to inflation. I don't believe that Gaia Cash was the only reason for the massive inflation that has occurred, but it was one of the main reasons. Now, I fear Gaia will never return to the way it was when I first joined in 2007, and I contributed to it becoming what it is now. This saddens me, but life goes on.
I don't know how much longer any of my accounts will remain active on Gaia, but I will say this: Gaia holds many wonderful, irreplaceable memories. To anyone who took the time to read this: Thank you. This is something that has been floating around in my head for some time. It's what I've observed about Gaia over the years. Now these thoughts have become tangible.
