Early evening. Edge city. A short girl dressed in black is seen running up to the Clock Tower where a blond boy waits. She waves to him, he waves back. they exchange smiles.
Yuffie came to a stop in front of him and bent over to put her hands on her knees. Once she's caught her breath she stood and grinned a bit sheepishly. "Hey, sorry I'm late! Didn't make you wait too long I hope?"
"Heh... Don't worry about it," he waved it off. "You didn't run all the way here did you?"
The ninja girl laughed a bit. "Well... Kinda!" She tosses a materia orb in her hand into the air and catches it. Grinning as she pockets it.
The blond eyed the materia and smirked. "Oh I see... You got caught didn't you?"
"Hey, now... It's true I was spotted, but I wasn't caught!" The ninja waved her finger at him. "Besides! If he didn't want anyone to have it then he'd have done better than an underground hideout with laser sensors and a quadruple lock that requires 4 codes to be entered within the span of 30 seconds!"
The boy gave her an incredulous look. Only Yuffie. Sigh.
"Axel still isn't here... Where could he be?" he wondered aloud.
Yuffie's expression fell and became masked with neutrality. She folded her arms behind her back and shrugged. Looking off to the side she replied flatly, "Probably forgot. Watching tv or something." Or he doesn't care.
The boy looked up at her and sighed. Perhaps this would be awkward... But he really wanted for all three of them to do something. Why did they have to fight anyway? Couldn't they just sweep it under the rug and be done with it?
He took out his phone and called the red head. After a few minutes of talking he hung up.
The boy sat on the ground to wait. He offered for the ninja girl to sit with him, but she preferred to stand. Some time later, a familiar voice called out to the boy. He stood and waved with a smile to the redhead who called, "Axel!"
The boy ran up to meet his tall friend. Yuffie followed behind at a slower pace and in silence.
"Hey lazy," the blond grinned.
"Lazy?!" the red head gave a look of feigned offense. One hand to his chest, his head to one side and his free hand waving in the air to ...be dramatic. Who knew why Axel did the things he did. Probably got the whole hand emphasis from Xemnas. The random knick knacks and bracelets on his arms jangled and jingled when he waved them. "I happened to have been working my a** off trying to be a millionaire in 4 minutes!"
The boy laughed. "Yes, lazy. Sitting on your a** attempting to answer questions about things and people you've never heard of doesn't count as working your a** off." He rolled his eyes at his drama-queening. He glanced at Yuffie slowly walking behind him and his face fell slightly. Maybe it would be awkward, after all. Well, he could try to have a little fun still.
Axel's expression faltered when he saw Yuffie, the muscles of his cheeks twitching slightly. Otherwise he regarded her cooly, glancing away with his hands stuffed in his pockets.
Yuffie came to a stop behind them and put her hands to her hips. "So! What are we doing?" The question more directed at their mutual friend. If nothing else he seemed to know what to do, as he had been the one to insist upon meeting up. She didn't bother acknowledging the presence of the red headed one.
Yeah. This would be awkward. "Well! Uh, we could goooo for something to eat? Have you guys eaten?"
She gave a shrug in response. Yuffie had the crazy ability to pack food away. Yet she stayed stick thin. Perhaps science would one day capture her and find out the reason.
"Mm... Boring, if I wanted to eat I could have done it at home. And became a millionaire"
The blond boy rolled his eyes at Axel. "Fine fine, we could go for ice cream. That's always good."
"...." Axel gave him a heated glare, pun not intended.
The blond smiled at Axel, even through the glare. "Well why don't you think of something?"
Yuffie smirked at the suggestion. Well if Axel wanted ice cream there was always that slip cover bag thing... then again seeing as they apparently weren't friends anymore, if ever, he probably didn't use it any more.
Axel regarded them with silence, "..."
He grinned. "Apparently Axel is speechless. Well, s**t. That's a first."
"Wow! It's suddenly quiet!" She couldn't help it. Or the smirk that followed.
"Ice cream melts for me," the red head continued giving them both blank glares, a frown on his lips.
"I'll hold it for you," the boy offered.
And have melted ice cream on your hands when he got near. Not that she'd say of course. It was their business.
"No thanks." He frowned, suddenly finding the old woman trying to cross the street more interesting than the other two.
The boy sighed and looked at the floor. This was a bad idea. "I'm sorry... You guys can just go."
"...You know, I should probably go. Leon's on my case for not being around to help out so much anymore anyway...." She turned and looked off, seriously considering leaving. Though feeling a bit bad about abandoning her blond friend.
"...I-..." Axel stopped and paused a moment."I just don't want to stick around." His expression was still blanked, as he continued staring as the old lady missed the next CROSS signal, apparently she had been feeding a squirrel...
"..." Yuffie gave the boy a quick hug. "Sorry, kiddo. Maybe next time.. we'll go ice skating or something." Of course not having forgotten a certain someone's inability to be on ice without falling through. As such suggesting a one on one play date.
"See ya..." She pulled back and started walking off down the street.
The blond looked at Yuffie. He was annoyed with himself, and a little at their fight. Hey. It was theirs. Let them keep it to themselves. Why did he have to be punished for it? "I miss the old days." He said, returning his gaze to the floor. "When we all had fun."
She stopped walking and looked down at the ground.
The old days... huh. The old days couldn't happen if someone didn't find them important either.
"...We never had fun, it was better with just me and you." Ruffling the blond's hair, Axel quickly turned and walked the other way. He made it to the corner in a few quick (and a bit heavy) strides.
Yuffie gripped her hands into fists. "You're such a jerk."
Axel heard her, but he muttered under his breath. Most likely out of her hearing range. "Wish she'd cram it."
The boy blinked and just stood there. If he wasn't in the middle before then he certainly was now. He wanted to go to them both. Comfort them both. But if he went off with one... the other would think he was on their side. He's not on either side, he doesn't understand this fight.
She turned to face them and shouted after them, "You know I've been thinking! When I gave you that paopu... You took it without thinking and just ate it. You didn't even know what it was until after! So it makes me wonder... Did you just trust me so much as to not give you rat poison? Or did you just not care?"
He heard Yuffie shout though, suddenly his face contorted into a scowl and he turned around. Without so much as a "b***h" he flipped her off, and disappeared around the corner.
"AXEL!" He yelled. Well, ********. Now what. He glanced at Yuffie and pleadingly looked at her. "I - I need to - I'm sorry! " He said, starting to run towards where Axel was last seen. URGH. He would NEVER try this again.
The gesture Yuffie received as an answer told her well.. he didn't care. Or maybe he was just that stupid. She gripped her fists so tight her knuckles turned white. Her face contorted in a grimace. Well... FINE! ******** him too! She gave an aggrivated shout and ran the opposite direction.
"******** b***h." He yelled back, not caring if no one heard him. He disappeared into a crowd of people, and even with his bright hair, Axel was quickly lost.
The blond continued running towards Axel, feeling like a ******** moron. Not only did he just leave his best friend to wonder off on her own in this shithole, he'd ******** this up even more. He stopped for breathe, clutching his side. Axel had run into a large crowd of people. s**t. He'd never find him. He pounded his fist against the wall repeatedly. "******** HELL!" He yelled, earning him a few shocked glances. He glared at them and they shuffled away.
Yuffie would run until she could find herself a nice unpopulated hole in the wall to curl up and wallow for a while. ******** b*****d! Just let him turn into Reno and be done with it! Reno never liked her anyway. Never even pretended to. At least with the stupid Turk she always knew where she stood.
She had always thought their friendship to be real in the past. It was something she had cherished, knowing that he would one day disappear and Reno would be awake for certain. That it could happen at any time. But recent events made her think such feelings were truly one-sided.
After all, how does one save a friend's life and say they only did it because everyone else was too stupid? Made it sound more like a bother than like they wanted to do it.
All she'd really wanted was for him to care, too. For it to have been important to him like it was important to her.
Was she really just the little neighbor girl no one really liked, but played with to humor her? Secretly wishing she'd just go away, but were too polite to say anything?
Yuffie hugged her knees to her chest and sniffed a bit, mumbling to herself. "Stupid... stupid stupid stupid..."
Everything was just stupid. Axel was stupid, the boy was stupid, even Yuffie was stupid. Varying reasons but still stupid.
The boy was stupid for making this meeting happen. Axel was stupid because he was being a jerk. Yuffie was stupid.. well for thinking she could have a real friendship with said jerk. All accounts were starting to look like the beanpole really didn't give a s**t about having real friends.
And she still didn't have the heart to tell Fiore anything about it
Stupid... Stupid... all of it STUPID! He really didn't care! ******** jerk! Why the hell did she become his friend anyway?? All the clinging he did to her at first, she thought he wanted to be her friend or something! And what about those times where he'd actually been nice to her? Was all that bullshit too?
THANKS A LOT AXEL! If this really was a one sided thing Yuffie would just kick herself till the end of the century. She swore she'd never get into something like that ever again!
So much for being careful who you pick to be your friends.
The voice in the back of her mind, the voice that was hers and yet not, laughed with morbid mirth.
Yuffie stood from her place on the floor and hung her head. She wiped her gloved forearm across her eyes and ran.
It took her half an hour, but she'd reached Fiore's apartment. Grateful that he had one and would be there when she came to see him. When he opened the door to her she would throw herself into his arms and cling to him. Letting her tears fall in sobs.
He'd pull her into the apartment and close the door. Hold her close and stroke her hair, allowing her to cry as much as she wanted. When he asked her softly what had happened, she'd refuse to tell him. He wouldn't pry. If she didn't want to tell, then he'd wait until she was ready.
Yuffie would stay the night in Fiore's apartment. Eventually crying herself to sleep in his arms.
