It was nice out today. Mathilda felt truely peaceful as she walked through the town of shadowdale on her way to the market. There was a slight breeze that gently caressed her skin. The rays of the Raliin sun bathed her in a soothing spring-time warmth. It was a truely beautiful day. Mathilda thought for a moment how often she had taken these sorts of things for granted; beauty, peace, warmth, nature. She tried as hard as she could to enjoy every moment of it. Beyond the village of shadowdale were grassy meadows as far as the eye could see. The grass was incredibly vibrant in contrast to the dull luster of the village - a rustic bit of flotsam in a magnificent emerald sea. And yet for the past month now, this village had been her home. It was such a short time to stay somewhere, but in many ways Mathilda felt more at home here than anywhere else she had visited. Shadowdale seemed to have that effect on all of its denizens. It's simple structural designs seemed to leave the impression of familliarity among even the travellers who merely passed it by on their way to Dragonhead. The people of Shadowdale were as friendly as they come, and also seemed to talk of their hometown with a fondness that could bring a tear to an ogre's eye. Mathilda had never met such passionate people. They seemed to have a lust for life that was absent in many other places of the realm.
She wished she could stay in this place forever, but somehow she knew that was not possible.
When she reached the market, the refreshingly sweet scent of fruit filled her nostrils. She picked out a few treats for herself from the produce cart - two apples and three peaches. "How much?" She asked the merchant. "three gold pieces" said the elderly man watching the cart. He smiled softly at her with eyes that betrayed his age. Mathilda dug into one of her pockets. She pulled out four pieces of gold and dropped them into the man's fragile hand. "Here's four, keep the change." She returned his smile. The old man's smile broadened and he nodded to Mathilda in thanks.
Having completed her shopping, Mathilda began to head back to the tavern where she and Kasuke had rented a room. On her way back, she passed a group of young children playing in the streets. She smiled as they ran around and past her, laughing all the while. They reminded her of her brother. Mathilda suppressed a tear and decided to take a short detour today. On such a beautiful day, it would be a crime to spend such a short time outside. She rationalized. Kasuke would not worry too much. She headed towards the feilds which surrounded the village. She walked to the top of a small knoll to the north of the village. In the distance, Mathilda could see the silhouette of Dragonhead. She set the fruit basket down gently beside her, so not to bruise it's contents, then tossed herself back onto the grass. The cool grass felt good against her skin. Her raven-black hair spread out around her head like ink spilled into her green ocean. She stared up at the ridiculously blue sky until it hurt her eyes. She closed them and let herself drift off into a light nap. The sound of the wind her peaceful lullaby.
