A man sat alone in a dimly lit room. The only light source coming from the desk light where he was busy reading an ancient computer screen. His young face held an expression of longing and pain that made him seem much older than he was. He had tried, so very hard. He could not get the Brotherhood back together. He was but one retired man. One general who was no longer needed. Sure they listened to him occasionally and there were those who still respected him. But this was no longer the time when a simple word from him would inspire or condemn. There was two thuds on the metal door. He looked up just as it swung open. The bright light in the hall causing the figure in the doorway to be nothing but a shadow.
The voice, he recognized it as one of the former squad leaders. “You could always leave. Come to where everyone else is going. Would that be so bad?” One of the very few people he ever thought would ask him to leave. So much has changed.
He thought for a moment before replying. “Bad…? No, not bad. However I cannot leave the place that I’ve made a home for so many. I cannot give up the hope that I can still make a difference here. This place means too much to so many.” He said, holding back tears. Everyone was gone now. What was he to do…?
