Kumi's Thoughts I don't actually use this anymore, but you can still read it if you feel like braving my stupidity.

Gala '10 and other tales

Really it's not such a big shocker with the Tesla coil in existence now.

I know how bad my last journal entry sucked after waiting over a month to write about that convention, but this time I'm only a week short of a month. Also, not as much excitement was seen at this year's Winter Gala as years past. Really it gave me some fleeting prom flashbacks (my senior prom was Great Gatsby themed and Winter Gala this year was the Roaring 20s) apart from the actually appropriate music they played. We had a live jazz band in there, as you'll see in my links to come.

As always, Winter Gala was held in the cafeteria, dressed up to hide all of the food stands and awkward flaws. They brought back last year's delicious chocolate fountain and added in plates filled with flour-free chocolate tortes and other sugary goodies. The spiral stairs that lead up to that part of the building were decorated to look like a big metal gate to a mansion of the era with rules posted on it. They went from condemning of bootlegging alcohol to various other transgressions of the 1920s, including the most confusing one written last: "No sitting on Big Boss's couch." I could not stop staring at that one.

This year the dance floor was so packed I couldn't even see it. While I love listening to jazz music, I don't for the life of me know how to dance to it. I was also one of the many people among my group of friends present without a dance partner. I spent most of my time in the main room of the cafeteria among the crowd of wallflowers just taking in the music and live performance by a jazz band called Different Hats. The greatest bonus to my being there aside from the live band experience was getting to wear a new dress for the first time. You can see me in it right here with eyes to match thanks to the camera flash. I'm aware it's a bit big on me, but that's not such a bad thing. Also, while in the main room, my friends and I puzzled over the shape of the table centerpieces. We got as far as establishing that it's the silhouette of a small jazz band, but that's as far as we got. sweatdrop

And now it's video link time. While listening to the band play from the wallflower corner, one of my friends was surprised to hear a certain song they played and I was surprised that she identified it like she did. I managed to record some snips of it with my camera's audio-only recording function, but none too long and all near the end. Still, though, let's see what the greater knowledge base of the internet makes of it. My best chunk of it, a total of 47 seconds of sound, is in this Photobucket video. If you can get it, kudos and a sense of pride in your music knowledge are yours. The answer is as follows, according to my friend: (
When We're Human from The Princess and the Frog).

I used the rest of my good sound clips in the video I took of the event. Every sound in the video was recorded in the main room of the cafeteria. I had a lot of weird footage to cut together, especially since a good way through Gala, some friends and I completely left the main room to escape the noise and just talk. General tomfoolery ensued, so naturally I caught a bit of it on tape. Admittedly, there are a few inside jokes in these visuals, but nothing that won't be somewhat funny to just anyone who watches. That video is here: Gala goofball-ery for all.

So, why did this entry take me so long to write? Partly paranoia with uploading photos and video to the computer without immediately backing them up somewhere for fear of another virus attack, partly preoccupation with other things. Looking back on last year's Gala entry, I typed that up just about a handful of hours after Gala even ended. My journal entry ethic is getting worse, though I've explained the cause of that already. There are actually two things I plan to write about now that explain the layer of dust on my journal updates. They are as follows.

Think way back to November. Remember what I said at the very end of that journal entry? I did it. I completely rebuilt my DMC roleplay thread, though not from the ground up this time. I did exactly what I said I'd do the last time I mentioned this: I treated the new thread as the continuation of the old one. The story got off to a sad start, but it picked up nicely and many of my old regs came back for round 2. It's slowed in recent days, but that crawl never lasts. People have schedules and lives to attend to and then there's RP. I completely understand that, especially since most of those regulars are much younger than me in real life. In character or out, I really am the oldest human being in that thread. Sort of...

The other thing that just recently captured my attention and refuses to fully release it is Pokemon SoulSilver, the Silver Version remake for the DS. I played the original Silver in ninth grade (though it had come out many years earlier) and fell victim to the cartridge design flaw that so many others did. My game was completely erased and I couldn't begin a new one. This time, however, the game card is designed almost exactly like any other aside from the infrared transmitter on top of it. I have nothing to worry about, so I'm heading into this game full tilt. I got it on Sunday, started on Monday and I'm already gearing up for gym badge number four. It really does pay to know the area ahead of time, even if it has been a few years. I also got to use the Pokewalker device that comes with SoulSilver and its companion game, HeartGold. I found one extra item, failed miserably at catching other Pokemon and leveled up my Magikarp, an otherwise-annoying Pokemon to train the conventional way. He's back in my DS now in preparation for my return home. Oh, I didn't mention I was on spring break, did I? Well I am, or rather, in a few days I can say I was. I return to school on Sunday night. Nothing super exciting happened this break, but I'm not disappointed. I have my thread (complete with what used to be an OOC logistics and chat thread that morphed into a day-by-day simple present-tense RP of its own, tying me to my Dante mule more often than not) and I have my Pokemon to train. What more could a complete nerd like me ask for? cool
