Koenma, you cheeky little b*****d. You’ve been waiting all day to tell Yusuke about your little “Kiss of life”, havent’ you? I can tell by that snarky look on your face.

AND A THOUSAND FANFICS WERE BORN THAT DAY!

User Image

That awkward moment when you relate to Atsuko. Hey, hanging with drag queens at the local bar can be a ton of fun. It’s easy to lost yourself in the bar scene.

User Image

PS. Koenma, I want your pocket watch.

User Image

Yay, Yusuke’s back! And damn, he looks good with his hair down.

User Image

Koenma’s troll face returns! New headcanon: Koenma is little more than a troll. Comparable to Princess Celestia, Sheogorath, or GlaDos.
“Why, yes, I could give you all the information I have. I could also do this job ten times faster and better than you. But I like to see you suffer.”

User Image

WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE ABOUT THIS MAN? Big sweetheart, big tough guy, really honorable, really noble, and LOVES KITTENS! Anyone who hates on Kuwabara instantly loses credibility points with me.
Side note: read a really interesting fanfic where Kuwabara’s love for cats was explained when he discovered that he was half tiger demon. I don’t usually like it when fanfics (literally) take his humanity away, but it was a good theory that explained his abilities.

Yusuke and Kuwabara tie for best screenshot face this time. Anime, you gotta love it.

I can't really tag these as episode reviews anymore ... maybe I can call them "offhanded episode commentary"?

YuYuRewatch: Episode 4
This journal entry is cross-posted to my Tumblr. You can read it here. It is part of the YuYuRewatch event.

I know I missed yesterday’s review. What can I say, I have a life. Anyway, I’ll be posting two today to make up for it.

User Image

In general, I’m okay with the manga-to-anime transition Yu Yu Hakusho made, but I’m majorly bugged by how they cut Sayaka’s backstory. Seeing her appear as the investigator means something totally different for the manga fans.
Also, props to Sayaka for shipping YusukexKeiko. Sayaka and Botan are shippers now, this is canon because I say so.

User Image

Oh, look, a teacher at this school that I don’t totally despise. He even has a tacky teacher tie. What’s not to like about a tacky teacher tie?

User Image

I wanna know more about this guy. Is he just a pyromaniac? Is he an enemy of Yusuke’s? Is he an enemy of Atsuko? Is he an enemy of the Yakuza and wants to murder Atsuko as a result? SO MANY QUESTIONS. Actually, my headcanon is he’s related to Atsuko’s Yakuza connection. Probably didn’t know she wasn’t home and wanted to smoke her out.

User Image

Today’s shout out is dedicated to the only guy in this crowd who’s trying to put out the fire. Aside from Keiko, you seem to be the only one who cares that there might still be someone inside.
I don’t know your name, but I’ll always remember you, Water Flinging Bucket Guy. *salutes*

User Image

I love how Kuwabara’s initial reaction to seeing Yusuke’s body isn’t, “WTF you’re a sicko!” it’s, “Come on, we can’t let you get arrested for this!” It’s almost like he figures she might be going mad with mourning and he just doesn’t want to see her life ruined because of it. Once again, leading me to the statement that Kuwabara is a total sweetheart. How do you not love this big orange marshmallow?

And, of course, here’s your obligatory collection of priceless screencaps.

I love it.

YuYuRewatch: Episode 3
This journal entry is cross-posted to my tumblr. You can read it here. It is a part of the YuYurewatch event.

I’m officially starting a goal to make these reviews shorter. Not because they’re too long, but because I screencap, crop, and resize all these pictures myself and it’s really time-consuming.

Anyway, this is the episode dedicated to ALL THE GUY LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP and be damned if I don’t LOOOOOOVE it.

User Image

So we get to see more of Kuwabara’s virtue and honor when he saves Keiko from a random creep on the street. It’s interesting because we’ve seen nothing up until this point to indicate a relationship between the two, so it might indicate that Kuwabara feels it’s his duty to protect her now that Yusuke’s gone. Does this go back to the Atsuko’s Yakuza connection from the manga? Are Keiko and her family officially protected by the Yakuza? Am I going to find an excuse to reference that connection in every review? Maybe … Probably not.

User Image

In any case, this says miles about what a cool, awesome guy Kuwabara is. Especially when he goes the extra mile after getting in trouble with Bucky here. Yes, I know the teacher has an actual name but you know what? I hate the b*****d and I can’t be bothered to remember it as a result. Also, the fact that he was following Kuwabara around is creepy in more ways than I have time to type out.

So Yusuke follows Kuwabara and witnesses the poor guy be repeatedly beaten by people who are trying to imitate his hairstyle.

User Image
User Image

Seriously, are they all just beating on him because they think he’s a part of a rival pompadour gang?

User Image

I have this little headcanon that the only reason Yusuke was initially following Kuwabara was to find a way to repay him for protecting Keiko. Once he saw Kuwabara taking so many beatings in the name of keeping his friend out of trouble, he realized how tough the man was and started to respect him. That was when Yusuke decided to help him out. And that’s pretty cool considering how few people Yusuke respects. It shows that both of them will go the extra mile for their friends.
(also, in the spirit of this being one of the fandom’s favorite guy love scenes, insert your yaoi joke HERE)

We end the episode with Takenaka showing how awesome he is and some good ol’ flower symbolism. I already wrote a little quip about the flowers, you can read that here. As for Takenaka … I love you, man, but why didn’t you fire Bucky on the spot? I would have. I guess you’re a bigger man than me.
(no pun intended)

This episode didn’t top the last one in number of priceless screenshots, but it definitely topped it in quality of priceless screenshots. I can’t decide which of these three are my favorite.

YuYuRewatch: Episode 2
This journal is cross-posted to my Tumblr. You can read it here. It is made as a part of the YuYuRewatch event.

The biggest character we meet in this show is Koenma. Everyone else was more or less established in the previous episode.

User Image

I gotta say … I love Koenma's voice actor. With a lot of voice actors, you can pretty much picture them in the booth recording their lines. Not in this case, though. Candice Moore IS Koenma, and she loves it. Nonchallant, cool-headed, on-top-of-things baby demigod Koenma.

User Image

We go back to earth, where we find Atsuko … at her worst. Of course, she just lost a teenage son. All considered, I'm not shocked that she's acting this way. I'd probably help myself to a stiff drink as well.

User Image

We proceed to be treated to some really feelsy scenes that are totally adorable and heart-wrenching, but I don't think I need to go into detail on them. Keiko and Atsuko miss Yusuke, to the point where they can shrug off the signs and dreams Yusuke sends them as delusions of a mourning mind. I could analyze it further, but I want to move on.

User Image

We find out that Kuwabara is a psychic, and HOLY s**t, KUWABARA IS BEING STRAIGHT-UP CHASED BY A DEMON. Dear Apollo, you've lived your entire 14 years of existence with this s**t? No wonder you're not afraid of Yusuke.

User Image

I know, man. You've seen some s**t.

I'm sure the rest of the internet will take care of all the jokes for when Yusuke is inside of Kuwabara (insert yaoi joke HERE), so I'll save that for other members of the fandom.

User Image

Here's a different thing: Keiko's parents deserve a shout-out. Look at Keiko's dad in this scene. That sassy sue just threw the second toughest street punk out of his store for insulting an old family friend … wait, family friend? Do Keiko's parents have connections with the Yakuza, too?

User Image
User Image

Don't ******** with those two, man.

User Image

Finally, Yusuke gets to talk to Keiko in the flesh. It's interesting to note that not only does Keiko know Yusuke well enough to recognize how he acts when he's in another man's body (insert yaoi joke HERE)...

User Image

but she also knows him well enough to recognize the second when he acts OUT of character.

User Image

We wrap up the episode with an adorable scene between Atsuko and Keiko, wherein they celebrate Yusuke's return to life and Yusuke's spirit egg feeds. We watch the ending credits roll reflecting on all of the ridiculous anime expressions we saw in this episode.
