John Stuart Mill
"However unwillingly a person who has a strong opinion
may admit the possibility that his opinion may be false, he
ought to be moved by the consideration that, however true it
may be, if it is not fully, frequently, and fearlessly discussed,
it will be held as a dead dogma, not a living truth."
If it means anything to you, I'm a hardcore post-structuralist liberal.
But of course, these labels hardly mean anything without context.

Yes, that helps very much in giving real-life examples of language in its performance. As well as how we claim to "feel" "masculine" or "feminine" and deconstructing this feeling as not something internal but rather external.
Yeah, I don't remember you arguing much on gender and feminist issues before. Ah, structuralism. I'm guessing you were a fan of Levi-Strauss and Lacan? biggrin I don't think structuralism is very relevant anymore, especially since anthropologists have found that there is no such thing as a universal human truth, as had been believed and argued by Levi-Strauss. Even 2nd wave feminists took a structuralist approach back in the 70's when arguing that there had to be some sort of authentic feminine that patriarchy corrupted/oppressed. These days the third-wave movement has taken a poststructuralist viewpoint thanks to Butler and Foucault.
And yeah, post-structuralism is very interesting. I love Derrida and Foucault. What I like is that you can apply the post-structuralist theories to almost everything in society. And honestly, it makes sense to me. Institutions and current discourse and the ability to define and categorize IS power. It's an approach that challenges dominating notions of biological/genetic essentialism common in mainstream science fields.
Have you taken gender studies before? It seemed like you are pretty well-versed in the theories.
Anyway, I responded to Herald of Lies War Death in Riviera's thread and part of it involved clarifying what I thought was your point. Could you read over and it and tell me it I got it wrong so I can change it?
