Maybe its where u are from.. We Americans consider the Mormons as being "weird" with their marrying of 13yr olds and cult like society. Other than the hate crimes, Gays and lesbians are slowly becoming more generally excepted.. Just the Human Rights issue that has been engulfed in California, shows me that acceptance is slowly but growing amongst the masses.
