About

Well a little about myself.
My goal for being on Gaia is to meet interesting and unique people. I believe everyone has unique and interesting qualities about themselves and I want to experience and understand as many of these qualities as I can. I try to be open minded about everything in life, good or bad and always enjoy meeting new people and making new friends. Also, I am a viking and I love to fight. My looks and such I do not really think are to important but I have been told I am not ugly. So there's that as well. Other then that thanks for reading all this and have a nice day

GE crops are built to withstand pesticides and herbicides. What happens is that when they use the pesticides, the pests become resistant and require even more. They eventually got to the point that the corn that they're growing had too many bugs and so they engineered it further to contain a built-in pesticide. In other words, it kills the bugs that eat it. The thing about the research, is that the seed companies, mainly Monsanto, hold the patents to these seeds. This makes it incredibly expensive to research these seeds. The companies also have a team of scientists waiting to pounce on any new research that surfaces. The funny thing is, the FDA and USDA both have high-ups that originally came from high-ups in companies like Monsanto. Fishy, isn't it? Food Inc, The World According to Monsanto and Genetic Roulette are all good documentaries to watch on the topic.

Thanks for your understanding. It will be tough, but worth it. Vegan is not fully necessary, but if I'm going raw, it will be important. While vegan diets are better for the environment, they are also easier for your body to digest compared to traditional diets. Unless you're eating organic meat and dairy, the pesticides are concentrated and incredibly hard on your body. It's really hard to get into exactly why it's better for you, but when you're working on detoxifying, it's an important thing to keep in mind. Organic animal products are incredibly expensive as well. I'm thinking I'm going to allow her one cheat day per week, where she can eat whatever she likes. Eventually, she will get to the point that she realizes how good the healthy food makes her feel, and stick to that. I like to bake, and so I could even make her some tasty treats.

I can understand what you mean about college. I don't agree with the education system whatsoever. I also don't agree with paying hoards of money to an institution when I can find a lot of the information elsewhere. I love to learn, but I try to stay away from being institutionalized. I don't necessarily want to be a hairdresser, but it's a cheap and short course to take to ensure a back-up career. I am artistic and like to do hair, so I think it could fit. Plus my boyfriend will have a lifetime of free haircuts! Good luck to your sister! What do you do for work?

[align=center][size=9][b]Yes, exactly! I completely agree with all of that. I don't think archery is a superior fighting technique, but it serves very well for hunting or a zombie apocalypse - but in that case, you might as well just use a crossbow. I guess it's more novelty than anything, unless you're in a survival situation and need to make a hunting tool.

With conservation, I just believe that our Earth is our home. It provides for us, it is the basis of our survival. Why should we poison and destroy it if it means poisoning and destroying ourselves? That being said, I am not against industrialization. I think that in order to prosper and grow, we can't live in a cave. The prosperity can only come with balance between the two. If we conserve our old growth (250 years and older) and have tree farms, we can have all the wood we need. We have to remember though, that tree farms aren't like a normal crop (such as corn or wheat) - they are an ecosystem. You can't just cut and be done. There are things we need to keep in mind when we are taking these resources, such as chemical runoff and how they affect the fish spawns. Another thing is with oil and natural gas. In order to extract natural gas from the Earth, you need to hydraulically fracture the rock. The pressure is so high that it comes right out in the beginning, but a fracking well can be used around 20 times before it retires. After awhile, they need to pump fracking fluid down there in order to complete extraction. Fracking fluid is regular water combined with hundreds of chemicals (solvents, surfactants, etc) and they use thousands and millions of gallons for each well. When they're done fracking, they're left with all the water. They truck the water out, but because there's so much of it, they like to dump it into creeks and fields and even have concrete pits that allow the water to evaporate into the air. This used to be illegal until Bush signed away the Clean Air and Water Act in the early 2000s. "Gasland" is a really good documentary to watch if you're interested in learning more about natural gas and fracking. The thing about trying to prevent the pipelines and tankers is that BC is the only temperate rainforest in the world. We have hundreds of rare and endangered species in our province - why should we risk it when we should be moving away from oil anyway? The straits between the islands on the coast of BC are incredibly tiny and windy. There have been hundreds of boats, of all sizes, that have capsized, disappeared, crashed... all sorts of things. We are still recovering from the Exxon Valdez oil spill and are facing endangerment of many native fish species. The biggest contributions to BC's economy are salmon and pot, and the former would be wiped out when something happens. I have spoken with someone who used to build tankers and he didn't hesitate to sign my petition - the reason being that tankers are almost impossible to stop. They say they're going to have more tugboats and extra measures for that, but in normal conditions, the tugs won't do anything to stop it. In the Kitimat, there is almost constant storms and the waters are incredibly choppy. He said that the best way to stop a tanker is to turn it around in a big circle, needing 50km of space to pull off. Some of the inlets on the proposed routes are only a couple km wide. Things just don't add up in terms of environmental safety. We shouldn't be heading that way anyway, so why are we expanding? There is so much we can do to get enough energy to live. I'm not saying we can sustain ourselves with how much energy we're using now, but we can live and be comfortable with less. It's not about scare tactics, it's about what we're leaving for future generations. People may not believe climate change and global warming, but clean drinking water is indisputable. You can't make water, and there's only so much good drinking water before we poison it all.

I will respond to you in detail in a little bit, I have a few things I need to get done and I'm not feeling well today.
Worst case, it'll happen tomorrow.

Also, your comment got cut off.

No worries about the awaited response.
That's super cool! I actually really want to get into MMA and boxing - maybe kickboxing, I'm not sure yet. Because of what I do, I think it would be a good idea to be able to defend myself without weapons. As much as I like to go to the shooting range, I think that guns are a dishonourable way to fight, which leads me to hating modern warfare (not that war is amiable in any way). It's not that I don't think that guns require skill, it's just that I don't think they show a talented fighter. It doesn't take much to defeat someone with a gun. I think that hand to hand combat, or using other weapons, are much more respectable. When I was a kid, I always wanted to get into fencing and karate. I have a distant cousin in New Zealand that is internationally recognized as an archer - she teaches Olympic-level archery. I think that would be a fun one to get into as well. I think everyone should learn sport-fighting because it doesn't just serve as self-defense; it's also good for respect and other virtues. Keep in mind that I'm open to your views on gun-fighting, so if your opinion differs, don't be afraid to speak up.

I'd say I'm more of a grassroots campaigner. I don't lobby with money, but with physical representation of votes. In other words, I help hold and participate in protests/demonstrations, film screenings, canvassing events (door-to-door petitioning), I distribute reading material both on and offline, I collect signatures of individuals and business owners. Surprisingly, I have yet to be arrested. I almost chained myself to a tree in December, which would have been protesting against logging ancient trees. Fortunately, the company backed off and sat down to negotiate some more. The battle there isn't over yet though, so I could be called back anytime. Right now I'm working with a few NGOs to stop the Enbridge and Kinder-Morgan pipelines and tanker expansions, as well as campaigning to ban GE (or GMO) crops - all in BC.

Other than activism, I'm living with my Mum, helping her to heal and treat her body properly while she undergoes chemotherapy for her Hep-C. She has cirrhosis, so I have to help her detoxify as much as possible and keep organic, raw and vegan. I have two months until the treatment starts, so I'm hoping I can get her on the right track quickly enough. I know a decent amount about nutrition, and so I shouldn't have any problems getting her all of the nutrients and amino acids her body needs to aid the recovery. I'll need to get my driver's license to be able to drive her to and from her treatments, as well.

Luckily, because I moved back with her, rent is free. This gives me a good opportunity to graduate, of which I'm two years late, and go through any post-secondary school I want. I'm thinking I'm going to get into hairdressing. I've done my own hair since I was 14, so I think it would be a fun thing to get into. I also am taking a course that will certify me in teaching ESL (English as a Second Language), which I can take with me when I travel the world. I'm going to learn a few languages to go with it, mainly French (my country's official second language), and maybe some others... Japanese interests me, though it doesn't go with French.

You said you like to play video games. Which ones are you into right now?

My name is Lizz. I'm 19 and live close to Vancouver, Canada.
I'm an an environment and food activist, but I try to encompass as many ideas as possible.
I'm a few years late graduating, but I'll be done this school year.
After I'm done, I will also be certified to teach English as a second language and will be fluent in French.
Things I like to do when I'm not working/activism-ing would include longboarding, drawing, playing video games, listening to music, hiking, beach fires...
My favourite video games include the Final Fantasy series and other J-RPGs.. Music-wise, I like pretty well everything. I mostly like dark and beautiful or happy and chilled out. A few examples: Rick White, The Shins, Dead Can Dance, Joy Division..
I also love to watch anime and just subscribed to Crunchyroll. My boyfriend of three years and I just finished watching Sword Art Online and thought it was fabulous. We also really liked Blood+, Trigun, Witch Hunter Robin...

I think I'll leave it at that for now. smile
