There's nothing wrong with going stock if you don't need custom. If you just need a few extra sticks of RAM installed, there's no sense in going to a custom site just for that, they're all over-priced. Brush up on computer maintenance and do it yourself. Trust me, you'll thank me for all the money I've saved you if you do your own maintenance.
http://newegg.com/ is my favorite place to shop for computers, parts, and accessories. Outside of that, your local geek-store should have what you need. But don't let them swindle you into buying unnecessary crap like Alienware does, or you'll defeat the purpose. xD
This rig can play any game I've put into it thus far (DMC4, Lost Planet, Portal, HL2, TF2, and Torchlight, among many, many others) flawlessly without breaking a sweat. And it only set me back $1,100. There's no unnecessary blue-ray s**t though, which very well might be what's causing your price to jump up so high. There's no overly fancy case either, unless you consider static blue LED lighting fancy. Put simply, you don't need all the fancy crap Alienware throws in. You just need a computer. wink
I don't have an i7 either, but I do have an AMD Phenom X4 955 which has served me great without a single problem. At least, not one I didn't cause by mistreating it. >>'
Not only that you had amazing points in that thread... But you have a frikkin' processor as your signature. Meaning, you're geeky enough to know what a processor is.
