There is a lot to be said for 'honesty.' Ive always felt that it is important to speak your mind, and be as honest as possible in all situations. It makes things much easier on yourself and others, at least sometimes. Now, what people tend to confuse is honesty and being blunt. If someone says something that causes some type of negative reaction, or hurts someone's feelings, or if a secret is let out or whatever; people tend to say, "What? I was just being honest" or "Sorry, thats just the way I feel." To me, thats not honesty, thats just being an a*****e...at this point you have no regard for others, and care only about being honest with yourself. You arent taking responsibility for your actions, and instead, you assign the blame the some greater or 'uncontrollable urge' or necessity of being true to yourself at all costs. I've never understood the overwhelming need to not care about what others think. God knows, you shouldnt be ruled by others expectations of you, because you should definitely be your own person and lead your own life...But always know that any action, great or small will affect someone, some how, in some way. Interaction of any kind should be reciprocal, involve tact and at least a small amount of care. Dont confuse tact, coupled with care, as censoring yourself or holding back true feelings...situations should be weighed and taken as they come.
Now, dont get me wrong, in no way am I the ********' poster boy for being perfectly honest at the right time, all the time. I piss off my fair share of people, fly off the handle, am inconsiderate, hurt others, and on and on; but I'm trying, and constantly try to be aware of myself. A lot of people don't afford themselves the opportunity to be aware...sure, they're aware of how THEY feel, or how they think they SHOULD feel, but never aware of themselves, by making that small, but consistent effort to be aware of your experiences and how others experience you. No doubt, to calmly listen to that faint voice in the back of your head, but at the heart of yourself, is by no means easy. To make it second nature for yourself as a growing person, takes practice and patience. I spoutin' some mad truth right here.
