[STORY ABOUT MEYVE NOOJ:]
Nooj had a reputation as a deathseeker before he even entered the Crimson Squad. Likely it was his motivation for joining. Don't just die, die gloriously, right?
But once he joined, and became close to Gippal and Baralai and Paine, one might think that should have abated. To some degree, it probably did. Nooj spent time talking and laughing with them, and seemed as interested in passing the training exams as getting killed. Nonetheless, it was his mind that Shuyin was able to enter, playing on his hatred and despair.
The sort of depression that gives rise to suicidal tendencies is not something that dissipates easily. Even when the depressed person seems to have regained the joy in life, such thoughts might be just under the surface. In fact, one of the warning signs for suicide is a sudden upturn in mood - once the decision to die is made, it can seem like a lot of stress has been taken off the person. Perhaps it was the same for Nooj in the Cadets. He was now in a position where he was likely to be killed, so he could relax.
This is mirrored in the "current time" of the game - Nooj has a great deal of power and responsibility as the leader of the Youth Alliance, he has competent people working with him, he has a woman interested in (or more like psychotically devoted to) him, and yet he repeatedly decides that the only solution to a given situation is for him to die.
And at the end of the game, when he stands proudly to discuss the bright future of Spira in the Calm? It's hard to say for sure. He sounds like he's ready to live for the future, but even then, old thought patterns can come back to haunt you.
So I'll confess, it's not just the "morally questionable guy with long hair and glasses" that fascinated me about Nooj. It's the background, the struggle with depression, because that's something that I've lived with as well. I once sought death, and sometimes I still battle that impulse.
[RELATIONSHIP:]
-Nooj and LeBlanc
Nooj's relationship with LeBlanc didn't seem entirely onesided. While he obviously doesn't see her in the extremely romantic way she sees him, he's not harsh or short with her. His work with the Youth Alliance showed him to be good at controlling and manipulating people crowds. Of course he's going to use her emotions to his benefit. At the same time, I don't think he's doing it in a cold or unfeeling way. She may not be much more to him than a puppy who fetches his slippers, but that would still make her a cared-for pet.

What it comes down to is that one who wants madly to die is not going to be running around forming attachments and friendships and romantic relationships all the time. Even in the "happy" flashbacks, Nooj was the one who was quiet and withdrawn. Still, I think it's obvious he did (and does) have some attachment to his teammates. Note the times he offers to stay behind and fight while they escape - I don't imagine that's something he'd do for just anyone.
