Deidre of the sorrows
in the reign of king conchobar of ulster, the king's harper and his wife had a beautiful baby girl. ther was much rejoicing at her bifth, but cathbad, the king's wise man, predicted that the girl's very beauty would be the cause of bloodshed and grief. "name her Deidre" he told the couple "for it means sorrowful one".
King Conchobar promised his harper that the prophecy would not come ture. he had her taken away to be raised in a secret place and he promised to marry her marry her himself when she was of age.
bur before that time came she met a handsome knight named Naisi and the 2 fell in love. knowing how angry the king would be the lovers ran away to scotland.
when the king found out what had happend he sent a messenger to find them and bring them home.
"tell them i forgive them and will be waiting with a royal welcome" he said.
when the messenger arrived, Deirdre begged Naisi not to go. she had a dream in which she had seen birds flying form the kings place with blood in thier beaks. but Naisi missed his home and ignored her warning. he set with her for ulster, certain that the king would keep his word.
but instead of welcoming Naisi the king had him killed. then forced the grief-stricken Deirdre to marry him. she was so unhappy that right after the wedding she threw herself from the kings chariot and fell to her death on the rocks below.
from the graves of Deirdre and Naisi 2 pine trees grew. in time the branches streched toword each other and mingled, growing togrther as one tall tree.
