~Chapter One- A Blessing or a Curse~

The dead autumn leaves fell to the ground as a young trainer steps through the entrance to the Ruins of Alph. The trainer was a boy no older than fourteen years old and carried only one Pokémon in his belt. The boy wore a brown hat with the logo for the Silver Conference on the front. He wore loose legged jeans and a short sleeved, hooded, green jacket that was unzipped with a black t-shirt underneath. He reached into his pocket and reread the letter his father sent him.

Dear Ein,

South to Violet City is a series of ruins called Alph. The people excavating have found strange puzzles there and need people to help put them together. I taught you all I know about how to put together jigsaw puzzles and you surpass me in the time it takes you to complete them. What I am asking you is to put together a stone puzzle for them. I told them that if they needed identification you would show Marin to them. I know you may be mad at me sending a letter like this after five years, but please, bear with me. I’m currently studying the ruins in Sinnoh. This will be a great help in my research. I know it will get you some credibility too.

Love,

Dad

“Hmph,” the boy named Ein huffed, “So, Dad is just doing this to further his research isn’t he?” Ein grabbed the Pokéball from his belt and looked at it. Seven years ago his father caught a Pokémon on a boat on his way back from the Sevii Islands. When he returned he gave her to Ein as a gift. As he walked he bumped into somebody. “Sorry, I wasn’t paying attention.”

“You do know the ruins are off limits to children, right?” the man he bumped into said.

“Oh, silly me,” Ein said, “I need to show who I am.”

“I’m sorry, but we don’t have room for kids on the site,” the man said as he showed Ein to the exit.

“Use Tackle, Marin!” Ein called as he threw his Pokéball out. A Magickarp emerged with a sparkle and landed on the man and bounced on him. Ein leaned down and said, “Sorry, but it was the only way to stop you. My dad said to show you my Pokémon so you know who I am. He said I was supposed to put together some kind of puzzle.”

“You know about the stone puzzle?” the man said between grunts of pain from Marin’s bounces.

“Frank, what are you dong?” a woman said as she ran over to the two.

“This boy somehow knows about the puzzle we found. Nobody was supposed to know about the information unless the boss gave permission or told them himself,” Frank answered as he pushed Marin off his body. Ein returned Marin to her ball and placed it back onto his belt.

“That Magickarp you have is a different color,” the woman said, “it’s just like the boss said. Frank, this is the boss’s son. He has come to put together the puzzle his father could not.”

“How do you know this?” Frank asked.

“The boss told me in a letter.”

“But-“

“Just let him inside,” the woman said as she showed Ein into the area.

“But how can a young boy do suck a hard puzzle?” Frank asked himself. A small tent was outside the ruins and inside was a pile of rocks.

“It doesn’t look like a puzzle,” Ein said as he picked up a rock and examined it.

“Your father put together some pieces already,” the woman said. “It is no doubt a puzzle.” The woman pointed to an assortment of rock that had an engraving on it. The lines curved and a black paint was placed in the concave area inside of the rock.

“Odd,” Ein said. Whenever he was thinking he acted older than his age.

“What’s odd?”

“Just give me some time,” Ein said, “I think that this is a picture of a Pokémon.”

A few hours passed and Ein emerged from the tent. He wiped off the sweat on his forehead with his arm.

“I’m done,” Ein said. “I was right it was a Pokémon. I’m not an expert on ancient Pokémon so you can figure it out better than me.”

Inside the tent the archeologists were amazed at Ein’s talent. Frank stood in awe at what a young boy did that even the best could not figure out. The leader of the group was the woman from before. Her name was Erin and she too was shocked at Ein’s work.

“Ein,” she said as she looked at the completed tablet. “This Pokémon is Kabuto.”

No sooner after she said those words a sound was heard from inside the ruins. The group turned around and one man was sent to look in the ruins. A few minutes later he came back completely white.

“They’re Pokémon inside there,” he said. Ein grabbed Marin’s Pokéball and said.

“Well, they are just Pokémon. I’ll go check it out. None of you have a Pokémon on you anyways,” Ein said.

“Take this,” Erin said as she handed him a Pokéball with a brown top with a black stripe going down it. “This ball is to capture specimens. It’s in everyway like a Master ball. I would like you to capture one of those Pokémon if they are what we call Unown.”

“Unown?”

“Ten years ago when this site was excavated your father found Pokémon in the shape of letters. The first puzzle he completed released three of the Unown. And three of them combined even posed a problem for even your father despite his Kingdra’s power. The Unown died so he could live. I believe that the Unown are meant to attack in swarms. So, don’t take on them all at once. Try to find on its own and capture it.”

“I gotcha,” Ein said as he exited the tent. The sun was beginning to set and he entered the cave lit up by the lights set up by the archeologists. He felt uncomfortable having this duty placed upon him. Wait a minute, Ein thought, Why are these adults sending me instead of one of their own? As he walked a voice that sounded like a hypnotic lullaby bounced off the walls of the room. He took another turn and a strange figure stood in the light. “Hello?”

The figure turned around and flew towards Ein. Its large eye in the middle of the spokes that were on the upper and lower right, the same on the left, left Ein in awe as it stared at him. Ein didn’t move at all and just stared at the Pokémon before him. Ein remembered what he was supposed to do and blink several times as he grabbed the ball and used its function to shoot the beam that keeps a Pokémon inside. A blue light came out and the Pokémon came inside and the deed was done.

Outside Erin came to Ein and asked for the ball.

“Don’t leave me,” girl’s voice said in his head. After he heard the voice a sharp pain entered his head and brought Ein to his knees. Erin took the ball from Ein, but that made the pain even worse and just as two other staff members came to see what was wrong the ball opened up and the Pokémon inside flew beside Ein.

“Unown,” Erin said as Ein slowly rose to his feet. The pain seemed to have gone away. The Unown circled around him and the archeologists backed away.

~Chapter Two-Nocturne~

It has been over a week since the incident at the Ruins of Alph. The Unown now follows Ein wherever he goes without returning into its ball. Ein has tried to return it to its ball, but it moved out of the way.

“You know,” Ein said as he sat down, “I think I should name you, since you’re not going to be leaving any time soon.” He threw Marin’s ball out to the pond in his backyard and let her swim about. The Unown bounced in his head at Ein’s remark about him wanting Unown to leave, but began circliong again as to being curious about its new name.

“Karp, karp,” Marip said as it splashed out of the water and went back in. Ein laughed and said. “You like the name Zarbi?” Unown circled around Ein with it’s eye closed. It seemed to bounce up and down. “Zarbi it is, then.” Ein said.

“Ein!” a woman called from inside a house behind Ein. Inside was a tall woman with blonde hair.

“Yeah?” Ein called back.

“It’s your father on the phone. He wants to talk to you about something,” his mother answered.

“Ok,” Ein answered. “Zarrbi, can you get in the ball, please?” Zarbi took a bit to realize that it had a new name, which was when it entered the ball. “Please stay in Zarbi. I can’t have any interruptions while I talk to Dad. You to, Marin. Return.”

Inside the house Ein’s mother handed him the phone.

“Hey, Ein, I heard about what happened last week at the ruins,” his father said.

“Yeah, well, now that Unown and I are starting to get along. I named it Zarbi,” Ein answered. “So, what do you want to talk about? Are you going to use me again to further your own career?”

“Listen, Ein,” his father said, “I’m sorry I asked you to do that puzzle all of the sudden. I thought youliked-“

“I do them when I’m bored.”

“Ok, I’m sorry. Anyways, a girl from Hoenn was taking care of an egg and gave it to me. I can’t take care of it so, can you pick it up at the Pokémon center? I’m sending it over soon.”

“Sure,” Ein answered. “You know what is inside of it?”

“I think it’s a Pokémon native to Hoenn.”

“Well, that seems nice,” Ein answered. “Anyways, you have a plan to help me give this unown to the- agh… hang on.” Zarbi exited its ball and began t attack Ein’s mind.

“I don’t want to go there!” the same girl’s voice said in his head.

“Ok, Zarbi, ok,” Ein answered as he put the phone back up to his ear.

“Tell your mother I am sending you on an errand to Ercuteak. Ask the gym leader Morty to help you out, but Morty likes to battle people as well. I ask that you at least get three badges on your way to Ecruteak City. He’ll be more likely to help you if you show him you got experience,” Ein’s father answered.

“Ok, after I get the egg I’ll head to Ecruteak. There’s a gym leader here in Violet City, right?” Ein asked.

“Yes,” his father answered, “I believe Falkner’s gym is at the center of the city. Just be sure you’re careful. You have enough Pokémon to take him on fairly, but he has a Pidgeotto. Your Unown may come in handy if Marin can’t do enough.”

“Would I be able to capture Pokémon on my way to Ecruteak?” Ein asked.

“Of course. Ask your mother for the pokéballs I left behind just incase Ratatta some how got into the house,” his father answered.

“Well, thanks, Dad,” Ein said. “I’ll talk to you again when I’m in Ecruteak.”

“I’m sending the egg to your account at the Pokémon Center. Take care, son.”

“Mom, I’m going to the Pokémon Center,” Ein called.

“Why’s that?” his mother answered from upstairs

“Dad sent me something from Sinnoh!”

“Not another Pokémon,” his mother sighed, “I don’t want you training.”

“Mom,” Ein said, “I’m fourteen. Dad also sent me on an errand to Ecruteak. He said I may need to beat three gyms on my way there. I’ll be awhile.”

“Your father what?” his mother yelled as she ran down the steps.

“He said to give me some Pokéballs to help me capture some Pokémon to aid me. Marin and Zarbi aren’t enough.”

“No,” his mother answered.

“I’ll get them myself then,” Ein said as he ran pasted her as he grabbed his backpack and ran into his parents’ room. At his father’s desk were six pokéballs. I’ll only need about four, but Dad said to take all of them. I may need a certain Pokémon that isn’t in my team at the moment, Ein thought. He grabbed all six, placed them in his bag, ran down the steps, narrowly avoided his mother, grabbed his hat, and headed out the door.

“Welcome to the Pokémon center,” the nurse said as Ein entered though the Pokémon Center’s automatic doors. Ein headed towards the desk and asked where they kept a PC. The nurse pointed to the computer to the right where a trainer just deposited a Pokéball of hers.

“Um, excuse me,” Ein said as he stood behind her. “Can I use this?”

“Of course you can,” the girl answered quickly and stepped out of the way. Ein began typing on it and opened up his account. He typed in his password and saw that an egg was inside his box. He clicked on it and waited for it to come out. The girl saw the egg on the screen and looked over his shoulder and said,

“So, which of you’re Pokémon did you use to breed it?” she asked.

“What?” Ein asked. He turned around and saw a girl who looked a bit younger than he was. The egg came out and Ein placed it in his backpack. The egg was black with red dots on it.

“That egg looks like it belongs to a fire type,” the girl said. “So, I’m guessing it’ll hatch into a Magby.”

“All I know is that the trainer who gave my father the egg was from Hoenn. The former owner is currently in Sinnoh,” Ein replied. The girl kept her black hair just above her shoulders and a red ribbon was tied onto her hair with the black symbol of a Pokéball on it.

“Hm,” the girl said as she placed a hand on her chin and held her elbow with her other, “how long have you been on your journey?”

“I don’t wanna talk about it,” Ein said as he covered up the Pokéballs on his belt, but it was too late and the girl had already noticed.

“You only have two Pokémon?” she asked. “Unless you are good or you’re a rookie--even if you’re a rookie you’ll need more.”

“Then do you mind helping me capture a third Pokémon for my team? I heard there are some rare Pokémon that only come out at night,” Ein asked.

“So, you are a rookie? What did you choose as your first Pokémon?” the girl asked. “I’m Maddie by the way.”

“Ein,” Ein answered, “I’m Ein and it’s a pleasure to meet ya.”

“So, do you have Pokéballs on ya?” Maddie asked.

“Yeah, “Ein replied as he retrieved the balls in their tiny form from his bag. The sun was beginning to set and Maddie took Ein by the sleeve of his shirt and dragged him outside.

“It should be night when we get to the gate to the route that leads to Cherrygrove City,” Maddie said as she continued to drag Ein.

“Um, Maddy, all I have is a Magickarp and an Unown, which should I use?” Ein asked.

“You have a Magikarp? What are you thinking? Those things never evolve and they’re weak!”

“Well, what did you start out with?” Ein asked, “I’ll battle it with her.”

“Come on out, Kusa,” Maddie said as she threw a pokéball out in front of her. “We have some time o kill and the night will still be young.”

“Come on out then, Marin,” Ein said as he threw his ball out. “Use tackle.”

“You’ve got to be joking, there has to be something wrong with your Magikarp if it’s that color,” Maddie said. “Razor Leaf, Kusa!”

“Marin, try to splash your way over to that pond there. We’ll have a better fight with you in the wat…er. Ok, too late, you just got knocked out,” Ein said as he saw his Pokémon get sliced by the sharp leaves.

“I win, Ein,” Marin said, “I have the type advantage.”

“Ok, ok,” Ein answered,” Maybe I need a bit more training, but if I want to beat Falkner I’ll need a third Pokémon. Marin can’t do anything very powerful.”

“Well, your Magickarp knows tackle, right? It must be stronger than the others. I think it should be able to handle his Pidgey.”

“How do you know that?” Ein asked.

“I already beat him,” MAddie said as she held out a case and opened it up. Inside was the Zephyr Badge.

“Wow,” Ein said, “Who did you use?”

“Since Kusa had a type disadvantage I decided to use Retta my Sentret and Coco my Aipom,” she answered. “Anyways, some of the nighttime Pokémon are out now. We should get moving.”

“Right,” Ein said as he grabbed a single Pokéball from the six in his pocket. H followed Maddie though the doors to the gate and walked through the inside of the building and exited the other side. “So, let’s see the Pokémon that are able to be caught at night here,” she said as she took a red device out of her backpack. She flipped it open and turned it on and the small screen turned blue. She pressed a couple buttons and listened to it. The machine said,

“Pokémon commonly found at night are Hoothoot. Hoothoot are commonly found in trees.”

“What is that?” Ein asked as he walked over.

“It’s a Pokédex. I received one when I got Kusa.”

“So, that is the item that all new trainers are beginning with,” Ein said. “I’m going to capture a Hoothoot. Come on out, Zarbi!” Zarbi emerged from the ball and flew in front of Maddie and began circling her curiously.

“So, this is an Unown,” Maddie said as she got its data into her Pokédex. “Anyways, they say Hoothoot are in trees. You should try to weaken it if it wakes up, because a lot are still asleep.

“Right,” Ein answered as he enlarged the other pokéball in his hand. “Zarbi, can you find a Hoothoot, but not disturb it?” Zarbi replied with a feeling in Ein’s head as an “alright.”

“I heard people are studying those Pokémon. Why do you have it?” Maddie asked. “It was talked about on the news.”

“I suppose you heard about the boy who unlocked them too, right?”

“Yes, but they didn’t say his name.”

“This ball is only given o those who are capturing specimens,” Ein said as he showed her Zarbi’s ball. “It’s the equivalent of a Master Ball.”

“So, you get to keep it? What’s the reason that they never said on TV,” Maddie asked.

“If I tell you will you travel with me to Ecruteak City? I need some help,” Ein asked as Zarbi came back and gave Ein the feeling of that it found one. He followed Zarbi as he waited for Maddie to answer. In the tree was a Hoothoot sleeping. Ein pulled his arm back and threw the ball at the Pokémon. It entered the ball and fell to the ground in front of Ein.

“Fine,” Maddie finally answered, “but why only to Ecruteak?”

“The reason Zarbi is my Pokémon is becau-“ Ein was cut off as his Pokéball hit him in the side of the head. Hoothoot woke up inside the ball and escaped. “What the? Zarbi, use tackle!” Ein ordered knowing that a battle was what he needed to do, but Zarbi just floated there. Zarbi made Ein feel its thoughts.

“I don’t know that move,” a girl’s voice said in his head.

“Then use whatever attack you got!” Ein replied.

“Yes, master,” Zarbi replied. It flew towards Hoothoot and charged up tiny balls one after another and shot them at Hoothoot.

“You’re Unown doesn’t know tackle? What attack is that?” MAddie asked as she held her Pokédex out.

“According to scientists who study Unown, the only attack the can use is Hidden Power. In swarms Unown using this attack over come even the Elite Four of ever region,” the Pokédex said.

“Hoot!” Hoothoot cried as it staged back and flew towards Zarbi and pecked it.

“Use Hidden Power again, Zarbi,” Ein called. Zarbi used it again, but was thrown back by Hoothoot and hit a tree and fell to the ground. “Zarbi!” Ein cried as he ran to it. He grabbed Marin’s Pokéball, but then realized that she was too weak to battle.

“Retta, use Tail Whip and Coco, use Tackle!” Maddie called as she threw two Pokéballs out. Aipom grabbed one of Hoothoot’s legs with its tail and flung itself towards it as Retta used it’s large tail to slap Hoothoot, but jumped out of the way just in time for Aimpom to slam it into a tree as well. “You can capture it, Ein, bt now you have to travel with me after Ecruteak.”

“Deal,” Ein replied. He liked this feeling of the adrenaline rushing through him, ordering his attacks, and having a friend to travel with. He did not care at all that his journey would be longer. He threw his Pokéball again and watched as the red light stopped flashing. He walked over to the ball and picked it up. “Welcome to the team, Nocturne.”
