A Walk to Remember
Edward and I walked silently together. The sun shattering off our skin into a thousand beautiful diamonds; this being the reasons on days like today, we tended to avoid humans.
He had been holding my hand since the second we had left the car so I had a thousand questions bubbling up, but somehow I surpressed them and waited for him to break the silence.
Finally he spoke.
"Do you remember", he started to ask in his velvet soft, angelic voice, "the first time I told you that I loved you?"
I laughed at the thought, because at the words "I love you" in that memory I had laughed at him in anger and ran away, and then when I finally believed him I had sobbed.
"Yes", I replied still chuckling.
He smiled my favorite crooked smile that reached his topaz colored eyes.
"I thought you would", he said still smiling at me, "but at the time I thought it wrong to ask you why you reacted so badly."
If I had been human I would have blushed, I was sure of it.
I looked away quickly.
"I can't tell you that," I said, answering his thought.
He frowned.
"Why not?", he asked, frustrated.
I stopped walking to think of an answer. He stopped in front of me and took my other hand.
"I'm afraid.... you may be angry..... or sad," I said quietly.
"It can't be that bad", he said, something strange about his voice. I looked up and saw he was surpressing laughter.
"What is so funny?", I asked angrily.
He smiled at me.
"It's just the thought," he said, "of being angry with you. I'm sure, if at all, it would only last a few seconds."
I looked down and sighed in defeat.
"I never deserved you", I said, then I looked back up, "but you proved me wrong, by loving me back almost as much as I love you."
He frowned.
"You're such a liar", I said frowing back angrily, then I let go of his hands and walked away.
"Cassandra", he called after me, then he caught up an dmatched his pace with mine, "Cassandra, I'm not angry."
I marched on.
When he spoke next he sounded very sincere, "I'm sorry. Come back," he begged.
I froze. He had never spoken to me like that. The beauty of his tone made me want to embrace him, but the shock froze me in place, and I knew it showed on my face because of what he said next.
"Cassandra?", he asked, then when I didn't reply he put his hands on my shoulders and shook me gentlyand asked, "Are you alright? Cassandra can you hear me?"
I smiled at him when I broke out of the shock.
"Were you purposely trying to seduce me? Or was it an accident?", I asked.
Relief flooded his face then he smiled and said, "I think it comes naturally." Then his expression became serious. "The reason I frowned was because you said almost as much as you love me. I think I love you more than you love me."
I stared into his eyes thinking about that then bit my lip, and shook my head.
"That's not possible", I said, placing my head against his chest, "I'd rather die the most horrible death then be without you, for they one of the same."
Edward's stance became riggid. "What do you mean?", he asked through gritted teeth.
"You know exactly what I mean...", I whispered softly, almost inaudible.
He wraped his arms around me and kissed my hair. "Please...", he begged, "don't ever think like that."
I frowned. "I can't promise you that", I said.
"Please...", he begged again.
I didn't answer, my choice already made.
He sighed. And we stood like that for an eternity, never moving, perfect statues.
After a few hours of silence, Edward moved his face so that his lips were almost touching my ear.
"It's late", he whispered, his tone lighter and more relaxed then before, "Do want to stay here? Or would you like a ride back to your apartment?"
I smiled and moved my face so my lips were touching his ear. "Back home", I whispered, "Only if you'll stay though?", I added quickly.
He chuckled and moved his face away a little. "Your wish, my command", he said smiling at me, his hand brushing across my cheek.
I smiled.
"You're my servant now?", I asked.
He laughed.
"No", he said, then moved his lips to my ear again. "I love you too much to do anything but to make you happy."
I turned my face to kiss his neck, speechless.
"What?", he asked, worried.
I shook my head, still not sure why I had reacted that way. "Nothing", I said, "Let's go."
We walked back in silence, holding hands as the sun set.
"Twilight", we said together, and laughed darkly.
"It's amazing how signifagent this part of day is to our kind", he said, truly smiling at me, not a trace of sadness on his face.
"I wonder why?", I said, "I've been what I am for over 300 years and twilight is always the sadess time of day."
Edward shrugged and squeezed my hand.
I saw we were at his silver Aston Marton DB9. He scooped me up into his arms before I could react and kissed me very gently on the lips. Out of reflex of the part of myself that I usually controled, kissed him back softly. I regeted it.
Edward thought my self-control was completely down so he kissed me much more eagerly, his tongue tracing the shape my lips.
I pushed him away gently, smiling. "No.", I said, teasingly.
His face dropped slightly, though still exuberant from the kiss. He placed me down in the passenger's seat of his sport's car, a second later he was in the driver's seat.
"Why?", he asked, "I love you. Why can't I have you?"
"You do have me", I corrected.
"Not the way I want you", he said, brushing his hand across my cheek, "Why don't you want me that way?"
I closed my eyes as he touched me, inhaling his scent. Before he could finish his last question, my lips were on his, moving eagerly with his. He cupped my face with one hand, the other trailing down my shoulder to my back, then he pulled me closer to his side. I cupped his face with both of my hands, kissing him back passionately. Then he moved his hand off my face gently on my chest, then he began un-buttoning my blouse. I broke away. Smiling through my disapproval of his and my own actions.
"I do want you", I said breathless, the eagerness still in my eyes as I fought it down, "But it's wrong right now. I'm a little bit more old-fashioned than you and I'm a widow. Back in my day respected, un-married people didn't even touch until marrige."
He smiled, the excitment burning in his eyes. "Then marry me. Tonight. We'll go to Vegas."
"No", I said, and his face became contorted with pain, "That's not what I meant!" I took his hand and brought it to my face kissing every inch of it. "I meant: I will. But not tonight. I want a real wedding."
I waited for his answer, my eyes down.
Then he kissed me. I could feel the joy he felt. The victory. I kissed him back gently, just in case my control snapped. He took my face in his hands to try to hold me to his face. I placed my hands gently on his chest. He broke away and sighed. "Aren't you a little bit excited?"
I moved my face very close to his and whispered, "Very, very much. I just don't want to ruin one of the reasons for us getting married."
"Then prove it", he whispered, his cool breath on my face.
I kissed him gently, but let the passion and happiness I felt leek out of the kiss. He kissed me back doing the same thing, letting me feel what he felt. The little voice in my head that kept me from taking him, right now, became weaker. I began to lose my control. I broke away quickly before I let him have his way.
He smiled at me. "I believe you now", he said, breathing hard from the kiss.
I smiled back. "I told you so."
"How about I take you home now?", he asked.
"You promised you'd stay," I said.
He smiled. "I will if you still want me," he said.
I took his hand still smiling. "I'll always want you."
He took my hand to his face and kissed it softly. "Then let's go."
He sped away from the forest path onto the road back to the city. It was nighttime now, the stars lit up the sky like glitter.
