Seeing the back of his strawberry-blond head, she ran toward him, her arm outstretched, fingers ready to jab him, just above the hip.
"Arrgh!" Jayden bent over as he felt her hand close in on his side. He turned around and saw her back, running away, her black pony-tail swinging behind her head.
It was recess. Michelle was laughing and joking with her friends, walking towards the oval together. She spun around as she heard footsteps behind her, and saw Jayden and Steve running, hands outstretched, toward her.
"Ahh!" she shrieked, "Don't!" but neither of them listened to her.
Because she was walking down a hill, Jayden could not slow down, and ran into her, tripping her over into the ground, where she stained her pants and cut her hands. Sure, she was embarrassed, but she had to laugh it off.
Later on, at lunchtime, she decided it was payback time.
When she saw Jayden and Steve walking across the oval, she got up to jab them again, despite the calls of, "stop flirting, Michelle!" from Katrina. This time, however, she only embarrassed herself more when Jayden hit her in the head.
She walked over to the edge of the oval and sat down, her arms around her knees.
She did not understand why she was so upset. Perhaps it was the fact that he really had taken 'the game' too far now? Perhaps it was the idea of Steve finding out about her crush on him? No, what upset her most was the embarrassment.
Usually she could take embarrassment quite well by just laughing at herself, but this time seemed to be different. It was just too much. Half her grade standing around and watching her get mad at a couple of guys who, really, meant almost nothing to her, almost brought her to tears.
