life...love....and all the other stuff in between
Winter is such a cold season, a season of death and long sleep. It is also a season of grgeat magic. For many years, I lay asleep, watching from shadows as man wove lives around me. Their world was not for me, forbiden by the laws that govern. I knew this. Centuries past I had seen mankind in its infancy, such a curious race they were, allways looking towards the dawn, towards the new day that would bring new treasures to those who saught them out. Many days I would watch from hideing, seeing the glowing faces of human children as they would discover some new joy in the world unfolding about them.
Those days were past, now all I saw in man, was greed. So much had been lost in those dark years. The hope that one day mankind would return to the joys of their past had fallen. Many of my kind had long since left these lands. Where they had gone, I could not even guess. I was alone, alone in my sadness. Once more I sat within the bare branches of a mighty oak. I no longer worried about being seen by mortal eyes, man had long since lost the gift of seeing my kind. I paid little attention to the faces of the humans passing before me. So caught up in their own lives, not seeing the less fortuneat about their feet. Tears clouded the corners of my eyes, I watched in sadness, watched the ignorant men and women walk past poor and homeless that barely had enoughe spirit to beg for anything that could be spared.
There, just beyond the corner of my vision, a young boy, not yet a man. Huddeled in the shadows of a brick building, trying his best to keep out of the wind. For some reason, he caught my attention, I couldn't help but let myself wonder back to watching. Then I saw him looking at something, his attention to some detail directed me to were a little girl was begging a well-off man for anything he could spare for her. The man could not be bothered, in his need to get this "worthless child" out of his way, he pushed her. The snow and ice caused her feet to slip oout from under her, she lost her balance and fell away from the man. Her fall took her into the street.
The boy was quick to react, rushing to the girls side. She couldn't gain her feet to get upright, a taxi, the drive to intent on his work, did not notice her in time, brakes squeeled, tires screetched. The boy leapt in, pushing the girl back onto the sidewalk, letting himself fall into harms way. He sacrificed his safety to save her from certain death. His actions caught more than just the passing eyes of other humans. From beyond the veil of mortal eyes, I to took notice of him. None saw my passing, the only sign that I had even touch anyone, was a quick chill that caught many ungaurded from my touch.
I kneeled beside the battered boys body, medics were already on the way. The tattered clothes he wore made clear to all who saw, that he was homeless. Fortuneatly for him, the hospital would still take him in, he would get minimal treatment, but atleast it meant a warm bed and hot food for a few days. A few days spared from the cold streets before he would find himself taken by the state and placed where far to many lost children found themselves. No one saw the small shadow that fallowed the boy, even if seen out of the corner of their sight, by the time
