I am listening to a song in Tamil, the most beautiful language in the world and my mother tongue though I am very very bad at enunciating words the 'Tamil' way though I am somewhat fluent. Learning Tamil is a very frustrating experience because it does not contain words like 's' (I wonder how they pronounce my name, ha ha) or 'sh', words which we use very frequently and has strange reflexive words like 'l' which is pronounced like 'yah' with the a pronounced when your tongue rolls to the tip of your throat which I cannot do (you can either do this or you cannot and if you don't learn the language fluently when growing up, you can never learn it again). It also unlike Sanskrit, another language with which I have some familiarity which is a Indo-European language so it has words like 'pitr' for father 'matri' for mother (which became mater in Greek which later became mother in English).
Anyways, one of the greatest thing about Tamil is how poetical it is. Some of the songs have very beautiful lyrics. I was going to translate some of it now from one of my favorite songs, 'Yengai Yanathu Kavithai (Where's my poetry)' from a movie called Kandukondein Kandukondein (I saw, I saw), a take on Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility until I realized I cannot translate well beyond the first four sentences so here's what I found.
Where's my poetry
that I have written and folded into my dreams
Did it dissolve before my waking eyes?
Did the sunrise destroy it?
Find my poem for me
Or else, give me back my dreams.
My heart is looking for a face
Lost in twilight, lost in the alleys of the mind
As I wander lost in love on, Asphalt streets of the city,
it withers, It looks for you in the interval
Between two drops of rain shed by clouds.
The heart desperately seeks its lover,
In foamy, breaking waters.
Just once let me see your beautiful face,
Peace will fill my heart,
Touch me with your finger tips,
And I will be born anew a hundred times.
I long for the heat, Of your breath,
That lingers after, You have kissed me.
I seek you, In your sweat-stained shirt.
My cheeks are eager to be bruised,
By the bristles on your beard.
I can hear it, I had sworn to a friend,
That my heart was made of stone.
You have taken root in my heart,
Just as a creeper does in the cracks of stone.
The woman in the movie sings this song when she realizes that her love (fiance), who had sworn that he will marry her, is marrying another woman in the wedding hall that she was invited to sing and broke his promises to her.
